The Delta State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education.
Adeda died following an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba, on Thursday, September 24.
The police said it had received allegations that Adeda was beaten by three aides to the commissioner identified as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh.
The command’s spokesperson, Edafe Bright, said police arrested Lucky Adoh after receiving the complaints, while efforts were ongoing to arrest the other two suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, has directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident and Adeda’s subsequent death.
Bright said investigators would examine available evidence, including video footage, eyewitness accounts, medical records and the actions of everyone connected to the incident.
He said the aim was to establish the facts and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.
The CP assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that the police would not shield anyone found responsible, regardless of their status or position.
He also urged the public to remain calm and avoid reaching conclusions until the investigation establishes what happened.
