A Chinese woman has responded to a viral video involving a Nigerian woman who accused some of her fellow compatriots of racism, offering a different explanation for the treatment she allegedly experienced.
In a response circulating online, the Chinese woman suggested that the incident may have been connected to strong perfume rather than racism.
She explained that some people in China may not be accustomed to heavily scented perfumes and that entering a confined space while wearing a strong fragrance could be uncomfortable for those nearby.
“It’s your perfume. Our sense of smell is not used to strong perfumes, and when you enter a confined space wearing your perfume, the smell literally stings our noses,” she said.
Her comment has sparked fresh reactions online, with social media users debating whether differences in cultural habits and personal preferences could sometimes be mistaken for discriminatory behaviour.
The original viral clip reportedly involved a Nigerian woman who raised concerns about what she perceived as racist treatment from some Chinese people. Her claims prompted discussions online, with Nigerians and other users sharing different views about experiences involving foreigners and cultural differences.
The latest response has added another perspective to the conversation, particularly around the role that strong fragrances, personal space and cultural habits can play in interactions between people from different backgrounds.
While the Chinese woman’s explanation has attracted attention, it remains unclear whether perfume was actually the reason for the incident described in the original video.
The exchange has nevertheless continued to fuel debate online about racism, cultural misunderstandings and the need to distinguish between deliberate discrimination and differences in everyday social behaviour.
