Portugal booked their place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Norway at the Estádio do Dragão on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The result maintained Portugal’s perfect record in Group A4, with four wins from four matches, and made them the first team to secure qualification for the quarter-finals. Norway, meanwhile, were left to reflect on another frustrating result after taking the lead but failing to protect their advantage.
The hosts entered the match without Cristiano Ronaldo, but Gonçalo Ramos stepped up to deliver the decisive moment and continue Portugal’s impressive start under Jorge Jesus.
Norway stunned the home crowd in the 36th minute when Kristoffer Ajer produced a spectacular finish to put the visitors ahead.
Martin Ødegaard supplied the assist from a set-piece situation, with Ajer meeting the bouncing ball on the edge of the penalty area before bending a superb right-footed effort into the top corner. Diogo Costa had little chance as Norway suddenly found themselves 1-0 ahead against the run of play.
Portugal, however, needed only two minutes to respond.
João Cancelo restored parity in the 38th minute with another outstanding strike. A quick throw-in from Nuno Mendes kept the attack alive before Cancelo received the ball around the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a powerful effort into the net.
The rapid response changed the momentum of the contest and ensured the teams went into half-time level at 1-1.
Portugal continued to control possession after the restart and created the more consistent attacking threat. The hosts finished with 59 percent possession, 20 shots and seven efforts on target, compared with Norway’s nine shots and three on target.
Norway still carried danger through Erling Haaland and their attacking players, but their threat was reduced when Haaland was substituted in the 67th minute. Jørgen Strand Larsen replaced the Manchester City striker as Norway attempted to regain their attacking momentum.
Portugal eventually completed the comeback in the 79th minute.
João Félix was at the centre of the decisive move, slipping a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Gonçalo Ramos. The striker, starting in place of Ronaldo, made no mistake from close range, finishing with his left foot to put Portugal 2-1 ahead.
The goal rewarded Portugal’s sustained pressure and gave Ramos another opportunity to demonstrate that he could provide a reliable attacking option in the absence of the country’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The closing stages then produced another major talking point.
Francisco Conceição was shown a yellow card in the 86th minute and was subsequently sent off after receiving a second booking following his reaction to a penalty appeal. Portugal were therefore forced to defend the final minutes with 10 men.
Bruno Fernandes was also booked in the 88th minute, adding further tension to an already dramatic finish. Portugal made late substitutions as they attempted to close out the victory, with Francisco Trincão replacing Fernandes and Nuno Tavares coming on for Félix in stoppage time.
Norway pushed forward during the final minutes and delivered dangerous balls into the Portuguese penalty area, but Portugal’s defence held firm. Five minutes of added time were not enough for Norway to find an equaliser.
The victory means Portugal remain perfect in Group A4 with 12 points from four matches and have already guaranteed a top-two finish, securing their passage to the Nations League quarter-finals scheduled for March 2027.
For Portugal, the victory was about more than simply reaching the next round. They showed character by recovering from Ajer’s stunning opener, responded immediately through Cancelo and eventually found the winner through Ramos.
Norway will take encouragement from the quality of their opening goal and their ability to frustrate Portugal for long periods, but their inability to hold onto the lead ultimately proved costly.
Portugal now move into the next phase of the Nations League with four victories from four matches. Even without Ronaldo, their attacking options continue to produce decisive moments, while Ramos has given the team another reason to believe they can compete at the highest level.
