PARIS, FRANCE — Chelsea defender Malo Gusto has reportedly missed out on France’s latest squad after new head coach Zinedine Zidane raised concerns about his defensive performances.
According to a report by Metro on Monday, October 5, 2026, Zidane and his coaching staff believe the 23-year-old needs to improve defensively before returning to the national team.
Gusto has been a regular member of the France setup in recent years, making 16 senior appearances since his international debut three years ago.
Zidane Prefers Other Defenders
Zidane took charge of France following Didier Deschamps’ departure after the 2026 World Cup.
The former Real Madrid manager has made an unbeaten start to his tenure, with France recording victories over Turkey and Belgium before drawing 1-1 with Italy.
France are scheduled to face Belgium again on Monday as their Nations League campaign continues.
For Zidane’s first squad selection, Jules Kounde and Pierre Kalulu were reportedly preferred at right-back, while Adrien Truffert and Andy Diouf were included among the left-sided defensive options.
French publication L’Equipe reported that Zidane’s coaching staff have reservations about Gusto’s defensive qualities.
The report claims the coaching team considers him not yet strong enough defensively and wants the Chelsea player to improve that aspect of his game before another call-up.
Gusto Played At 2026 World Cup
Gusto was part of France’s squad at the 2026 World Cup and featured in five matches during the tournament.
However, his only start came in France’s dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off.
His omission from Zidane’s first squad therefore represents a setback for a player who had established himself as part of the national team’s wider setup.
The decision, however, does not necessarily close the door on his international career.
Chelsea Continue To Rely On Gusto
Despite the France snub, Gusto remains an important member of Chelsea’s squad under manager Xabi Alonso.
The defender has started five of Chelsea’s opening seven matches this season and has demonstrated his ability to operate in different positions.
Although naturally a right-back, Gusto has also been deployed in defensive midfield, adding tactical flexibility to Chelsea’s squad.
His versatility has helped maintain his importance at club level despite the latest disappointment with France.
Premier League Clubs Monitor Defender
Gusto’s performances have also reportedly attracted interest from other Premier League clubs.
Manchester City and Liverpool were said to have explored a possible move for the defender during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea reportedly value the Frenchman at around £80 million, meaning any potential transfer would require a significant investment.
For now, Gusto remains focused on his responsibilities at Stamford Bridge.
Gusto Can Respond At Chelsea
Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture against Bournemouth could provide Gusto with another opportunity to demonstrate his qualities.
With France’s next international break approaching in November, the defender has time to respond to the reported concerns from Zidane’s coaching staff.
A consistent run of strong performances, particularly defensively, could strengthen his chances of returning to the France squad.
For Gusto, the message from the new France regime is clear: his attacking ability and versatility are recognised, but improvements in defensive consistency could determine how quickly he returns to the national team.
