ABUJA, NIGERIA — Lagos State has the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figures on Tuesday during the commission’s World Press Conference in Abuja.
The briefing formed part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission providing updates on electoral planning and voter registration data.
Lagos Leads Voter Register
According to the figures presented by INEC, Lagos has 7,488,633 registered voters, placing the state at the top of the national ranking.
Kano State follows with 6,000,570 registered voters, making it the only other state with more than six million registered voters in the figures released by the commission.
Kaduna occupies third position with 4,000,640 registered voters, while Katsina State ranks fourth with 3,876,051.
The figures highlight the large voter populations in several of Nigeria’s most populous states as political parties and candidates prepare for the next general elections.
Oyo Ranks Fifth
Oyo State occupies fifth position on the list with 3,588,111 registered voters.
Delta State follows closely in sixth position with 3,525,988 registered voters.

INEC Intensifies 2027 Preparations
The disclosure comes as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The commission is expected to provide further updates on electoral logistics, voter registration, technology, polling arrangements and other aspects of the election process as the exercise approaches.
The voter figures will also be closely monitored by political parties and candidates as they organise their campaigns and voter outreach programmes across the country.
While the number of registered voters does not determine election outcomes on its own, the distribution of registered voters provides an important picture of the size of the electorate across Nigeria’s states.
With Lagos leading the latest ranking, the state remains the largest registered-voter base in the figures released by INEC ahead of the 2027 elections.
