Chelle Reveals Tactical Secret Behind Super Eagles’ 3-3 Comeback Against Russia

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed the tactical adjustment that helped Nigeria recover from a two-goal deficit and secure a dramatic 3-3 draw against Russia in an international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod.

Nigeria appeared to be heading for defeat after Russia turned an early setback into a 3-1 lead, but the Super Eagles produced a strong late response, scoring twice in the final stages to rescue a point.

Chelle said the turning point came after Nigeria changed the way its strikers operated, allowing the team to exploit spaces behind the Russian defence during transitions.

“We found a solution because tactically we changed something about our strikers,” Chelle explained after the match.

According to the coach, the adjustment made it more difficult for Russia to deal with Nigeria’s attacking movements, particularly as the hosts struggled to find an answer during the closing stages.

The Super Eagles had started the encounter brightly and took the lead in the 10th minute through Kelechi Iheanacho.

The forward’s early goal gave Nigeria confidence, but Russia gradually grew into the contest and began creating problems for the Nigerian defence.

Lechi Sadulaev eventually brought the hosts level before Matvey Kislyak completed Russia’s turnaround before half-time.

Nigeria struggled to regain control after the interval, and Russia increased its advantage in the 54th minute when Aleksey Miranchuk made it 3-1.

With the Super Eagles two goals behind and time running out, Chelle’s changes became increasingly important.

Nigeria began finding more opportunities in transition, and the pressure eventually produced a second goal.

Peter Edokpolor, who had come off the bench, pulled one back for Nigeria in the 78th minute, giving the visitors renewed belief and setting up a tense finish.

The Super Eagles continued pushing forward, and their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time.

Abdullahi Umar created the opening for Akor Adams, who finished the move to make it 3-3 and complete Nigeria’s remarkable comeback.

Chelle was particularly pleased with the response from his players after the difficult spell around half-time.

“The second half of my team was very good. I applauded my players,” the coach said.

The Nigerian manager acknowledged that Russia had enjoyed the better moments around the end of the first half and the beginning of the second period.

He admitted that Nigeria had allowed the hosts to gain momentum, which ultimately resulted in Russia scoring twice before the break and adding a third shortly after half-time.

However, the late tactical change helped Nigeria regain an attacking threat.

Chelle’s explanation has since been challenged by Russia coach Valery Karpin, who rejected the suggestion that tactical changes were responsible for Nigeria’s comeback.

Karpin argued that Nigeria simply introduced different players and attributed Russia’s late problems to individual mistakes rather than a significant tactical adjustment.

The contrasting assessments added another layer to an already dramatic encounter, with both coaches offering different explanations for Russia’s failure to protect a 3-1 advantage.

For Nigeria, however, the result provided a welcome response after the Super Eagles suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their previous 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture.

The Russian draw also came with a heavily changed Nigerian squad. Several established players were unavailable, giving Chelle an opportunity to assess younger options and increase the depth of his team.

The performance of the substitutes was particularly encouraging. Edokpolor scored the goal that restarted Nigeria’s comeback, while Umar provided the assist for Adams’ stoppage-time equaliser.

Nigeria therefore left Russia with more than just a point. The comeback demonstrated that Chelle’s team could remain competitive even after losing control of a match and falling two goals behind.

The challenge now is to reproduce that resilience when the stakes are higher.

With Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign still requiring consistency, Chelle will hope the lessons from the 3-3 draw can translate into stronger performances in competitive fixtures.

For now, the Super Eagles can take confidence from a comeback that appeared unlikely when Russia moved 3-1 ahead.

Chelle believes the tactical adjustment gave Nigeria the opening it needed. The late goals from Edokpolor and Adams ultimately provided the evidence that the change had made a difference.
