Nigerian striker Terem Moffi has expressed his delight after scoring his first Bundesliga goal for Hamburger SV, helping the German club secure a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Hoffenheim.
Moffi came off the bench to score a crucial equaliser before Miro Muheim struck a stoppage-time winner to complete Hamburg’s remarkable turnaround in their Matchweek 5 encounter on Saturday.
Hamburg had travelled to Hoffenheim hoping to build on their recent progress but found themselves trailing 2-1 after a difficult second half. However, the visitors refused to surrender, with Moffi making a decisive contribution after being introduced as a substitute.
The Super Eagles forward replaced Martin Adeline in the 76th minute and needed only seven minutes to get his name on the scoresheet.
In the 83rd minute, Muheim delivered an excellent cross from the left, allowing Moffi to rise above the defensive challenge and direct a header into the far corner. The goal restored parity at 2-2 and gave Hamburg renewed belief that they could leave with all three points.
Speaking after the match, Moffi expressed satisfaction with his contribution, praising Muheim for providing the assist.
“We’re very proud. I’m happy I was able to help the team with my goal. Miro’s cross was absolutely wonderful. I just had to get into position,” the Nigerian striker said, according to Hamburg’s official website.
Moffi added that his equaliser convinced him Hamburg still had enough time to complete the comeback.
“After that, I felt we still had a chance to win the game. We managed to do that in the last minute,” he said.
His confidence proved justified as Hamburg continued pushing for a winner against their hosts.
Deep into stoppage time, Muheim completed the turnaround with a superb first-time strike in the 94th minute after Hoffenheim failed to clear a corner situation effectively. His effort flew into the bottom corner, securing a 3-2 victory for the visitors.
The result represented an important away win for Hamburg, while Moffi’s equaliser marked a significant milestone in his efforts to establish himself in German football.
Before Hamburg’s late comeback, the visitors had taken an early lead through Yussuf Poulsen in the 12th minute. Hoffenheim subsequently drew level through a Sebastiaan Bornauw own goal in first-half stoppage time before Bambasé Conté put the hosts ahead in the 53rd minute.
Hoffenheim’s task became more difficult when Bernardo received a second yellow card in the 65th minute, leaving the hosts with 10 players for the closing stages.
Hamburg capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Moffi and Muheim providing the decisive moments that transformed a potentially disappointing afternoon into a memorable victory.
Beyond his goal, Moffi also expressed appreciation for the support Hamburg received from travelling fans during the encounter.
The Nigerian described the atmosphere created by the supporters as extraordinary and thanked those who made the journey to cheer the team on.
His comments reflected the importance of the victory to the club and the encouragement he received from the supporters as he continued his adjustment to life in Germany.
Moffi joined Hamburg after his spell with French club Nice and has been working to establish himself following fitness setbacks that disrupted his preparations for the new campaign.
Those difficulties limited his opportunities to build momentum early in the season, making his performance against Hoffenheim particularly encouraging.
His return to action and subsequent breakthrough could provide a foundation for greater involvement in Hamburg’s attacking plans. The striker will now hope to use the goal as a springboard to improve his match fitness, confidence and consistency.
For Hamburg, the victory demonstrated the team’s determination to fight until the final whistle. For Moffi, it offered a personal breakthrough and an opportunity to strengthen his position as the club continues its Bundesliga campaign.
The Super Eagles forward will be eager to build on the performance and turn his first league goal into the beginning of a productive spell in German football.
