A 15-year-old girl in Guatemala has shocked her family and community after regaining consciousness inside a coffin during her funeral, hours after she was presumed dead by her father without medical confirmation.
The teenager, identified as Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, reportedly collapsed after experiencing severe chest pain while her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, was taking her to a medical facility on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
The incident occurred in El Jocote, a village in the municipality of Sacapulas, in Guatemala’s Quiché department, where relatives and neighbours had gathered to mourn the teenager.
According to reports, her father stopped the vehicle after believing she had stopped breathing and that he could no longer detect a pulse. He subsequently abandoned the journey to the hospital and returned home with his daughter, believing she had died.
However, no doctor had examined the teenager to confirm her death, and no official death certificate had been issued before the family began funeral preparations.
Hours later, what had started as a gathering to mourn her death turned into a scene of astonishment when her mother noticed movement inside the coffin.
Mother Notices Movement Inside Coffin
Yuleidy’s mother, Lesvia Ríos, reportedly noticed that her daughter was moving while she was crying beside the coffin during the wake.
According to accounts of the incident, the family opened the coffin’s viewing window and discovered that the teenager appeared to be regaining consciousness.
Ríos said she had continued insisting that her daughter was still alive despite the family’s belief that she had died.
The teenager subsequently sat upright inside the coffin, leaving relatives and other mourners stunned.
Footage of the incident circulated on social media, showing people gathering around the coffin as they helped the girl out and offered her water.
The emotional moment attracted widespread attention online, with some people describing the incident as a miracle while others questioned how the teenager had been presumed dead without a medical examination.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have also raised concerns about the importance of confirming a person’s death through appropriate medical procedures before funeral arrangements begin.
Teenager Recalls Severe Chest Pain Before Collapsing
In accounts shared after the incident, Yuleidy reportedly described experiencing intense chest pain before losing consciousness.
She explained that her heart began hurting severely and that she felt a heavy sensation before blacking out.
The precise medical cause of her collapse and subsequent recovery has not been established in the reports available.
Her father’s account indicated that he believed she had died after checking her breathing and pulse while they were travelling to seek medical attention.
However, the absence of a detectable pulse or breathing during an informal check does not establish that a person is medically dead. Proper medical assessment is necessary to determine a person’s condition.
The family had reportedly arranged the wake approximately eight hours after the teenager was initially presumed dead.
The case has since prompted questions about the decisions made during the emergency and why medical professionals were not consulted to confirm her condition before the funeral preparations proceeded.
Guatemalan Authorities Launch Investigation
Guatemalan authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the teenager came to be presumed dead without medical certification.
The country’s Public Ministry is investigating the case, while the Procuraduría General de la Nación, the government agency responsible for protecting children and adolescents, has also become involved.
Authorities are seeking to establish what happened before, during and after the teenager’s collapse and to determine whether any negligence occurred.
The investigation comes amid concerns that the decision to proceed with funeral arrangements without confirming the girl’s death may have placed her life at risk.
Officials have not announced a final determination of responsibility, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Yuleidy was subsequently taken for medical evaluation, with reports indicating that doctors were carrying out examinations to establish her health condition and investigate the cause of the episode.
Medical assessments are particularly important because the available accounts do not establish whether she experienced a fainting episode, another medical emergency or a different condition.
The results of the examinations are expected to provide further information about what happened.
Incident Sparks Debate Over Medical Confirmation of Death
The incident has generated discussion about the dangers of assuming that an unconscious person has died without professional assessment.
Although the family reportedly believed that Yuleidy had stopped breathing and had no detectable pulse, those observations alone were insufficient to establish that she had died.
Medical professionals use established procedures to assess vital signs and determine whether death has occurred. An unconscious person who appears unresponsive requires urgent medical attention rather than immediate funeral arrangements.
The case has also drawn attention to the challenges of accessing healthcare in some rural communities, although the precise factors influencing the family’s decisions have not been fully established.
For Yuleidy’s relatives, the experience was an extraordinary reversal from grief to relief. However, the incident has left important questions unanswered about the teenager’s medical condition and the circumstances that led to her being placed in a coffin.
Until the medical examinations and official investigation establish what occurred, claims that she returned from the dead remain unproven.
