Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has been handed a four match suspension by the Spanish Football Federation following his dismissal against Villarreal, ruling him out of the highly anticipated El Clasico clash against Barcelona on October 25.

The disciplinary decision, announced on Wednesday, October 14, means the Brazilian international will miss four consecutive La Liga fixtures as Real Madrid prepare for a crucial period in their domestic campaign.

The suspension follows an incident during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, October 10. Vinicius was sent off after a video assistant referee review identified an incident involving Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba during the build-up to what would have been his second goal of the match.

Vinicius initially appeared to have scored for Real Madrid, but the goal was subsequently disallowed after video replays showed him pulling Saliba’s hair when the two players were not competing for the ball.

Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera Escuderos reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor before showing the Brazilian winger a straight red card.

The dismissal sparked an angry reaction from Vinicius, who protested the decision as his teammates attempted to calm him down and escort him away from the referee.

The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee subsequently imposed two matches of suspension for the violent conduct that led to his dismissal and an additional two matches for his protests towards the match officials.

The ruling means the 26 year old will be unavailable for Real Madrid’s league fixture against Sevilla on October 18, their away encounter against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on October 25, their subsequent match against Racing Santander on November 1, and the meeting with Valencia on November 7.

His absence from El Clasico represents a significant setback for Real Madrid, who will have to prepare for one of the most important fixtures of the season without one of their most influential attacking players.

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona remains one of the biggest attractions in world football, with the outcome often carrying major implications for the La Liga title race.

Vinicius has been an important attacking presence for Real Madrid in recent seasons, using his pace, dribbling ability and movement to trouble opposing defences. His capacity to create chances and stretch defensive lines has made him a key component of the club’s attacking strategy.

Without him, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho will have to consider alternative attacking combinations ahead of the encounter against Barcelona. The manager could adjust his forward line or rely more heavily on other available attacking players to compensate for the Brazilian’s absence.

Real Madrid had hoped to limit the disciplinary consequences of the incident, but the four match suspension represents a longer punishment than the club had reportedly anticipated.

The club had challenged the disciplinary case, seeking a reduction in the potential punishment. However, the disciplinary committee upheld the decision to impose the four match ban.

Real Madrid are expected to pursue a further appeal in an attempt to reduce the suspension, although the outcome of any subsequent challenge remains uncertain.

The incident has also attracted attention because of the circumstances surrounding Vinicius’ dismissal. Pulling an opponent’s hair is treated as violent conduct under the relevant disciplinary rules, particularly when the action occurs away from a contest for the ball.

The additional punishment for protesting the decision further increased the length of the suspension.

Vinicius later apologised to his teammates and the club’s supporters following the dismissal, acknowledging the disappointment caused by the incident.

Despite his domestic suspension, the Brazilian remains eligible to feature in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League matches during the period covered by the ban, as the punishment applies to domestic league fixtures.

This means he can continue to contribute in European competition while missing the four scheduled La Liga matches.

Real Madrid will now have to manage his absence during a demanding stretch of the season, with the matches against Sevilla and Barcelona particularly important to their domestic ambitions.

The suspension also provides an opportunity for other members of the squad to demonstrate their value as the club attempts to maintain its competitiveness in the title race.

For Barcelona, Vinicius’ absence removes a significant attacking threat ahead of the first El Clasico meeting of the 2026/27 La Liga season. However, the result will ultimately depend on the performances of both teams, their tactical decisions and their ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities.

The disciplinary decision has therefore added another major talking point to an already eagerly anticipated fixture between Spanish football’s two biggest rivals.

Unless an appeal changes the ruling, Vinicius will have to watch the October 25 encounter from the sidelines as Real Madrid travel to Barcelona without one of their leading attacking stars.

His return to domestic league action is expected to come against Celta Vigo on November 21, following the international break, provided there are no further disciplinary developments.
