Arbeloa Demands 90-Minute Focus as Fulham Chase First Win

Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa has urged his players to maintain their concentration throughout the entire match as the struggling Premier League side prepare to host Hull City on Saturday, with mounting pressure on the Spanish coach to deliver their first league victory of the season.

Fulham head into the encounter at Craven Cottage rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, having collected just two points from their opening six matches. Four defeats and two draws have left the London club searching for answers after a difficult start to the campaign.

Arbeloa, who took charge in July following Marco Silva’s departure to Benfica, insists that his immediate priority is helping the team secure three points rather than worrying about speculation surrounding his position.

Reports have suggested that another disappointing result could intensify calls for a managerial change. However, the former Real Madrid and Liverpool defender maintained that his focus remains on the club, his players and the supporters.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture, Arbeloa said the team had continued working normally despite the pressure and that the players were determined to reward supporters who have remained behind them during the difficult period.

The manager stressed that Fulham needed to sustain their best performances for the full 90 minutes, rather than allowing promising displays to unravel during crucial stages of matches.

His comments follow a painful 2-1 defeat away to Ipswich Town last weekend, when Fulham appeared close to securing their first league victory before conceding twice late in the contest.

Ryan Sessegnon had given Fulham the lead in the 55th minute with an impressive finish, raising hopes that Arbeloa would finally record his first Premier League win as manager.

However, Abdoul Ouattara equalised late in the match before Dara O’Shea scored the decisive goal in stoppage time, completing Ipswich’s comeback and leaving Fulham empty-handed.

The defeat highlighted a recurring problem for Arbeloa’s side, who have struggled to protect promising positions and maintain their defensive organisation when opponents increase the pressure.

Fulham had experienced a similar disappointment in their 1-1 draw against Manchester United in September. After taking the lead, they conceded a late equaliser to Matheus Cunha, missing another opportunity to claim all three points.

Their goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield offered a more encouraging performance, demonstrating that the team can compete against difficult opposition when they remain organised and disciplined.

Arbeloa pointed to these performances as evidence that his players have shown commitment to his plans, although he acknowledged that maintaining their level throughout an entire match remains essential.

The manager also praised the attitude displayed during training ahead of the Hull encounter, expressing confidence that his squad understands the importance of the fixture.

For Fulham, Saturday’s match represents an opportunity to turn encouraging spells of football into a result that could restore confidence and ease the growing tension surrounding the team.

Hull, meanwhile, will arrive at Craven Cottage hoping to take advantage of Fulham’s difficult position. The hosts must balance their desire to attack with the need to remain defensively disciplined, particularly after their late collapse against Ipswich.

The pressure on Arbeloa is significant given the club’s position and the expectations surrounding his appointment. Having signed a three-year contract after leaving his previous coaching role at Real Madrid, the Spaniard faces an early test of his ability to translate his tactical ideas into consistent Premier League results.

Nevertheless, he has continued to insist that the team’s performance and the supporters’ expectations matter more than speculation about his future.

A victory against Hull would provide Fulham with their first league win of the campaign and offer a much-needed boost ahead of their next challenge against Coventry City.

For Arbeloa and his players, the task is straightforward in principle but demanding in execution: reproduce their promising football, eliminate costly lapses and remain focused until the final whistle.

Whether Fulham can finally convert their performances into three points will be determined at Craven Cottage, where the struggling side face an important opportunity to begin turning their season around.
