LAGOS, NIGERIA — Hospital workers and patients have foiled an attempt to steal a newborn baby in Lagos State. The incident occurred at a hospital in Abule-Egba on Saturday.
A woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, allegedly attempted to steal the baby from the hospital’s maternity ward.
The Foiled Attempt
According to eyewitnesses, the woman walked into the maternity ward. She pretended to be a relative of one of the patients.
She then attempted to take a newborn baby. But a nurse noticed her suspicious behaviour.
The nurse raised an alarm. Patients and other staff members quickly intervened.
“They caught her while she was trying to leave with the baby. She was handed over to the police,” a witness said.
Police Confirmation
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspect is in custody.
He said the police have launched an investigation into the matter. He also said the baby is safe and has been returned to its mother.
“The suspect is in custody. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The baby is safe,” Hundeyin stated.
Hospital’s Response
The hospital management praised the staff and patients for their vigilance. It said the hospital has security measures in place.
But it acknowledged that the incident highlights the need for increased security in maternity wards.
“We commend our staff and patients for their quick action. We will review our security protocols to prevent a recurrence,” a hospital official said.
What This Means
The incident highlights the vulnerability of newborns in hospitals. It also shows the importance of vigilance among staff and patients.
Baby theft is a serious crime in Nigeria. It carries severe penalties if the suspect is convicted.
What Happens Next
The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The police said they would ensure that the suspect faces the full weight of the law.
For now, the hospital has urged patients and their relatives to remain vigilant. It also urged them to report any suspicious activities to the security desk.
