A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Nnamdi Dickson-Iroegbu, has called on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to support a proposed Peter Obi-Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Dickson-Iroegbu made the call in a press statement dated October 20, 2026, in which he praised former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for his response to what he described as propaganda targeting the former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
He said Kwankwaso’s response was timely and direct, accusing unnamed political actors of promoting narratives aimed at undermining Obi.
The NDC chieftain maintained that the opposition needed unity to stand a stronger chance in the 2027 election, warning that multiple candidates could divide votes and weaken the challenge to the ruling party.
NDC chieftain urges Atiku to back Obi-Kwankwaso ticket
Dickson-Iroegbu described Atiku as a respected elder and experienced political figure but argued that his political experience did not automatically guarantee victory in the next presidential election.
He urged the former vice-president to support Obi and Kwankwaso, citing the need for national balance and an understanding among opposition figures over the distribution of political power.
The statement referenced Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides for the federal character principle in the composition and conduct of government institutions.
However, the constitutional provision does not expressly require Atiku to withdraw from the presidential race or endorse a particular candidate.
‘Obi-Kwankwaso ticket represents hope’
Dickson-Iroegbu described the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as an alternative for Nigerians seeking improved governance, inclusion and national unity.
He argued that opposition leaders needed to put aside individual ambitions and work towards a common political platform ahead of the 2027 polls.
“The choice before the opposition is now clear: continue multiplying candidates and dividing the electorate, or unite behind the ticket with the strongest momentum and the clearest path to victory,” he said.
The NDC chieftain further described the proposed ticket as one capable of addressing the country’s challenges and restoring public confidence in governance.
He concluded by declaring that the 2027 election should provide an opportunity for Nigerians to demand political change.
The statement was signed electronically by Dickson-Iroegbu, who identified himself as an NDC chieftain and National Town Crier of the Village Boys Movement (VBM).
