DAMATURU, NIGERIA — The Yobe State Police Command has arrested three suspects for allegedly stealing farm equipment in Bursari Local Government Area. The stolen items included water pumps and solar panels.
The arrest was confirmed on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim. He said the police acted on a tip-off from members of the community.
The Arrest
Abdulkarim said the suspects were arrested following credible intelligence. He said operatives moved swiftly to apprehend them.
“Following credible intelligence, our operatives arrested the suspects. We recovered the stolen items from them,” Abdulkarim stated.
He said the suspects had been terrorising farmers in the community for some time. He said their arrest would bring relief to the affected farmers.
Items Recovered
The police recovered three water pumps and two solar panels from the suspects. They also recovered other farm tools.
The items were allegedly stolen from a farm in the area. The police said the equipment was valued at several hundreds of thousands of naira.
“The suspects specialised in stealing farm equipment. They would sell the items to unsuspecting buyers in neighbouring states,” Abdulkarim said.
Suspects’ Confession
Abdulkarim said the suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation. He said they provided useful information that could lead to the arrest of their accomplices.
He said the police were intensifying efforts to apprehend other members of the gang.
“We are not relenting. We will fish out all those involved in this criminal enterprise,” he said.
Farm Theft in Nigeria
Farm theft is a major challenge for farmers in Nigeria. It affects their livelihoods and food production.
Many farmers have lost their investments to thieves. This has discouraged some from continuing with farming.
The police have urged farmers to remain vigilant. They advised them to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
What This Means
The arrest is a positive development for the community. It shows that the police are responding to reports of crime.
It also serves as a warning to others who might be involved in similar activities. The police have demonstrated their commitment to protecting farmers and their investments.
What Happens Next
The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The police said they would ensure that the suspects face the full weight of the law.
For now, the farmers in Bursari are relieved. They hope the arrest will deter others from stealing farm equipment.
The police have also urged farmers to take proactive measures to protect their equipment. They suggested the use of tracking devices and community policing.
