Today, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks a significant milestone – its 70th anniversary. For seven decades, the NUJ has been at the forefront of promoting press freedom, ethical journalism, and supporting journalists in Nigeria.

Over the years, the NUJ has faced numerous challenges, from navigating the complexities of Nigeria’s nascent democracy to confronting the harsh realities of censorship, intimidation, and violence against journalists.

Yet, despite these obstacles, the union has remained resolute in its pursuit of excellence, advocating tirelessly for the rights of journalists and the freedom of the press.

The NUJ’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy cannot be overstated. By promoting ethical journalism and supporting journalists in their quest for truth and accuracy, the union has played a vital role in holding those in power accountable and giving voice to marginalized communities.

Through its various chapters and training programs, the NUJ has also helped to nurture a new generation of journalists, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving media landscape.

As the NUJ celebrates this milestone anniversary, it is essential to acknowledge the union’s enduring legacy and its continued relevance in contemporary Nigeria.

In an era marked by increasing misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, the NUJ’s commitment to promoting fact-based reporting, media literacy, and ethical journalism is more crucial than ever.

As we celebrate the NUJ’s 70th anniversary, we also recognize the challenges that lie ahead.

The union must continue to adapt to the changing media landscape, embracing new technologies and innovations while remaining true to its core values.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists’ 70th anniversary is a celebration not only of the union’s achievements but also of the power of journalism to shape public discourse, hold those in power accountable, and promote democracy.

As we honour the NUJ’s enduring legacy, we also reaffirm our commitment to the values of press freedom, ethical journalism, and the unwavering pursuit of truth.
