Saraki Drops Bombshell On Fate Of PDP Governors Ahead Of 2027

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Reconciliation Committee and former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has sounded a note of caution over the party’s current internal instability.
As the PDP continues its efforts to reposition itself for the 2027 general elections, Saraki has warned that more defections may be on the horizon.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, June 27, 2025, Saraki revealed that the party may not have seen the last of its challenges, especially regarding defections from key members.
“PDP would likely see one or two more defections, and we should prepare ourselves for that; there is a possibility.
We haven’t seen the worst of the defections for PDP.
We would probably see maybe one or two governors who will defect, and we might see some senators who will defect,” he said.
While acknowledging the difficult period the PDP is currently navigating, Saraki expressed optimism that the timing of the crisis might ultimately benefit the party.
According to him, the fact that these events are occurring now, rather than closer to the elections, offers the party a strategic window to rebuild and regroup.
“For some of us, this happening early in PDP is an advantage.
“We are lucky that this is not happening, let’s say, late 2026; we would not even have had time to recover and regroup,” Saraki explained.
He noted that the party still has nearly two years to prepare for the 2027 general elections, and that this window should be seen as an opportunity rather than a setback.
“We have just under two years to the election, and we are lucky to have that.
“I think, with a lot of commitment and understanding, it is not a lost cause,” he stated.
“A party with over 26 years of history that has been around, the largest party, we will definitely have low times like this.”
Despite the crisis brewing at the top, Saraki stressed that the PDP remains deeply rooted in many parts of the country, especially at the grassroots.
He argued that the internal turmoil has not significantly disrupted the party’s influence at the local and state levels.
“When you go round the country, the state chapters, the local government chapters, the party is still very strong in the grassroots.
“In some areas in the country, they are not even aware of what is happening at our level, in Abuja,” he said.
“The reactions we are seeing at the grassroots give us a lot of encouragement.
“But what we need to do is to get to the bottom and start to build.”
Looking ahead to 2027, Saraki emphasized that the PDP is already working behind the scenes to rebuild its foundation.
He urged the leadership to embrace significant changes at the party’s next convention, emphasizing that the future depends on involving fresh voices and younger leaders.
“This is not just about resolving today’s issues.
“It’s about building for the future.
“The next convention must not be business as usual.
“We must bring in new, younger faces who represent the future of this party,” he advised.
He went on to highlight the broader implications of PDP’s potential collapse, warning that Nigeria risks sliding into a one-party state if the opposition fails to revive itself.
“If PDP fails, Nigeria edges closer to a one-party state.
“And that would be a disaster for democracy,” Saraki warned.
In light of these concerns, Saraki’s message is clear: the PDP cannot afford to be complacent.
While the party grapples with defections and leadership challenges, there remains a strong opportunity to rebuild from the bottom up.
With time still on its side and a loyal grassroots base to draw from, the party can reinvent itself, but only through bold reforms, fresh leadership, and strategic vision.
As Nigeria’s main opposition party, the PDP’s ability to recover will play a critical role in shaping the democratic landscape ahead of 2027.
Whether it succeeds or falters will depend on the resolve of its leaders.
It will also depend on their willingness to make the difficult but necessary choices to secure the party’s, and the country’s, political future.
