Terem Moffi Called Up to Super Eagles AFCON Squad as Victor Boniface’s Replacement

Nigeria has made a substitution in its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, calling up OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi to replace the injured Bayer Leverkusen superstar, Victor Boniface. The announcement was made by Babafemi Raji, the team’s media office, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Moffi’s inclusion in the Super Eagles’ squad was not part of Jose Peseiro’s initial 25-man list, making his participation in the AFCON contingent on the approval of his club, OGC Nice, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

“Victor Boniface is out, and Terem Moffi is in his place, pending approval of CAF and concurrence of his Club,” stated Raji.

The 23-year-old Boniface missed the Super Eagles’ friendlies against Al Gharib and Guinea on Monday due to an injury. The Bayer Leverkusen forward, who has scored four times in five appearances for the Eagles, made his debut for Nigeria in a 1-0 loss to Cameroon in 2021.

According to All Nigeria Soccer, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will await CAF’s approval to officially register Moffi for the AFCON. Additionally, OGC Nice’s approval is required before Moffi can join the Super Eagles for international duty.

This marks the second substitution for the Super Eagles since January 3, when Alhassan Yusuf was named as a replacement for the injured Wilfred Ndidi. The team aims to reinforce its lineup and strategic options ahead of the upcoming AFCON campaign in Ivory Coast on the 13th of January.
