UMUAHIA, Nigeria — The Abia State Government has completed work on its climate change policy, marking a significant step in its efforts to tackle environmental challenges, promote sustainable development and improve access to international climate financing.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the resolutions reached during the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti. According to Kanu, the newly finalised policy is expected to provide a comprehensive framework for addressing climate-related issues affecting communities across the state while positioning Abia to benefit from global climate intervention programmes.
Kanu explained that the climate change policy was developed to strengthen the state’s preparedness against the growing impacts of climate change, including flooding, erosion, extreme weather conditions and environmental degradation. He said the policy aligns with national and international climate objectives and is designed to encourage sustainable management of natural resources while promoting environmentally friendly development initiatives.
The commissioner noted that the completion of the policy places Abia in a stronger position to attract international climate financing from development partners, donor agencies and global climate funds. He said access to such funding would support projects aimed at improving environmental sustainability, strengthening climate resilience and protecting vulnerable communities from the effects of climate change.
According to Kanu, the state government believes climate financing will play a critical role in implementing projects focused on renewable energy, waste management, erosion control, afforestation, sustainable agriculture and other environmental programmes. He added that the policy would also guide public institutions, private organisations and development partners in coordinating climate-related interventions across the state.
The commissioner said the Executive Council reaffirmed the Otti administration’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection, stressing that climate action remains an important component of the government’s long-term development agenda. He noted that the policy would help integrate climate considerations into planning and decision-making across various sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, health, education and urban development.
Kanu further explained that the government intends to work closely with relevant federal agencies, international organisations and other stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the climate policy. He said collaboration with local communities would also be essential in promoting awareness and encouraging environmentally responsible practices that contribute to climate resilience.
Climate experts have consistently warned that Nigerian states face increasing risks from climate change, including severe flooding, desertification, coastal erosion and changing rainfall patterns that threaten agriculture and livelihoods. In response, many state governments have been developing climate action plans and policies to improve preparedness while creating opportunities to access international funding dedicated to climate adaptation and mitigation.
The Abia State Government said the completion of the climate change policy represents an important milestone in its environmental agenda and reflects its determination to build a more resilient economy capable of adapting to future climate challenges. Officials expressed confidence that the policy will not only strengthen environmental governance but also unlock new investment opportunities that support sustainable economic growth, protect natural ecosystems and improve the quality of life for residents across the state.
