German international forward Karim Adeyemi has expressed his delight at seeing Nigerian players excel on football’s biggest stage, describing their success as a source of happiness while reflecting on his encounter with Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen in the UEFA Champions League.
Adeyemi made the remarks after coming off the bench to score in Barcelona’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Galatasaray at RAMS Park in Istanbul on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The result extended Barcelona’s winning start to their Champions League campaign and left the Spanish giants with six points from their opening two matches.
The 24-year-old forward, who was born in Munich, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother, acknowledged his admiration for Nigerian footballers competing at the highest level, even as he celebrated his team’s success against Osimhen’s Turkish side.
“It is always nice to see Nigerian players on the big stage. I always feel happy for them, but I think our defence did a great job yesterday, and it was very hard for him to make any serious impact,” Adeyemi said.
Although Adeyemi represents Germany internationally, his Nigerian heritage remains an important part of his personal background. His comments reflected the pride he feels when players of Nigerian origin perform on the global stage, while also highlighting the competitive nature of elite European football.
The forward’s connection to Nigeria recently attracted attention after a childhood photograph of him playing street football during a visit to Ibadan circulated on social media. The image renewed interest in his Nigerian roots and offered supporters another glimpse into his connection with the country.
Adeyemi’s professional career has taken him through several stages of European football. After developing through youth football in Germany, he moved to Austria, where he played for Red Bull Salzburg and its development side, FC Liefering. His performances earned him recognition as one of the country’s promising attacking talents before he returned to Germany to join Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
He subsequently established himself in the Bundesliga and featured in Dortmund’s run to the 2024 Champions League final. In July 2026, he completed a move to Barcelona, signing a contract that runs until 2031 and reuniting with manager Hansi Flick, who had handed him his senior Germany debut in 2021.
Against Galatasaray, Barcelona initially faced a difficult evening after the hosts took the lead through Aleksey Batrakov in the 28th minute. The goal gave the Turkish side hope of securing a memorable result in front of their home supporters.
Barcelona responded before the interval when João Cancelo equalised in the 43rd minute, restoring parity and giving the visitors renewed confidence heading into the second half.
The Spanish side then took control through a rapid attacking spell. Fermín López put Barcelona ahead in the 50th minute before Anthony Gordon added another goal three minutes later, leaving Galatasaray with a difficult task as the visitors increased their advantage.
Adeyemi completed the scoring in the 65th minute, seven minutes after entering the game as a substitute. He finished from the left side of the penalty area after Gabriel Jesus redirected a cross from Lamine Yamal into his path.
His contribution underlined Barcelona’s attacking depth and gave the German forward another opportunity to make an impression during his first season at the club.
While Barcelona’s attacking players delivered the goals, their defensive organisation also proved important in restricting Osimhen’s influence. The Nigerian striker found it difficult to create clear opportunities against a defence that worked to limit his movement and prevent him from receiving the ball in dangerous positions.
One of Osimhen’s headed efforts ended with Barış Alper Yılmaz putting the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a video assistant referee review. Osimhen was also flagged offside repeatedly as Barcelona maintained a disciplined defensive line.
The challenge was significant for Galatasaray, who needed their forward to provide a consistent attacking threat against one of Europe’s leading sides. However, Barcelona’s defensive approach limited his opportunities to influence the contest.
Adeyemi praised his team’s mentality after the victory, stressing that Barcelona’s ambition extended beyond winning individual matches.
“You see how we play, with a winning mentality, and our performance shows we want to win everything. You see this in every match. No retreat. No surrender,” he said.
The result placed Barcelona at the top of the Champions League standings with six points following victories in their opening two matches.
For Nigerian football supporters, Adeyemi’s comments also carried significance beyond the result. His appreciation of Nigerian players reflects the growing visibility of footballers with Nigerian heritage across Europe’s major competitions.
Osimhen continues to represent Nigeria at international level, while Adeyemi has pursued his senior international career with Germany. Their different journeys illustrate how players with Nigerian connections have established themselves in elite football through different national and professional pathways.
Adeyemi’s remarks ultimately combined respect for Nigerian footballing talent with the determination of a player focused on helping his club succeed. His goal against Galatasaray ensured that Barcelona secured another important European victory, while his comments offered recognition to Nigerian players making their mark on football’s biggest stage.
