Africa’s Oldest Stock Exchange Targets Dangote Shares

Africa’s oldest stock exchange is exploring ways to give investors access to shares in the Dangote Group through depositary receipts, a move that could expand investment opportunities and strengthen cross-border trading.

The initiative could allow investors to gain exposure to selected Dangote Group businesses through financial instruments traded on a stock exchange, without necessarily purchasing the underlying shares directly in their home market.

Depositary receipts represent shares in a company and can make it easier for investors to access businesses listed in other markets.

They can also help companies attract a wider pool of investors and improve their visibility among international financial institutions.

For the Dangote Group, the development could broaden investor participation in its businesses as the conglomerate continues to expand its presence across key sectors, including cement, fertiliser and refining.

The move also reflects growing efforts by African stock exchanges to deepen capital markets, improve liquidity and attract more investment across the continent.

However, the proposed arrangement will depend on the structure of the depositary receipts, regulatory approvals and the specific Dangote Group shares made available to investors.

If implemented, the initiative could mark another step towards connecting African capital markets and making major home-grown businesses more accessible to investors across the continent.
