Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has urged his players to put Enzo Fernandez’s departure behind them and focus on the challenges ahead after the Argentine midfielder completed a British record-equalling £125 million transfer to Manchester City.
Fernandez’s move was finally completed on transfer deadline day following weeks of uncertainty over his future at Stamford Bridge. The 25-year-old midfielder left Chelsea for City after prolonged negotiations between the two Premier League clubs, with the final fee matching the British transfer record.
The transfer represents a significant change for Chelsea, who had initially indicated that Fernandez was not for sale. However, Manchester City’s late approach eventually led to negotiations that continued until close to the transfer deadline before an agreement was reached.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Alonso acknowledged the significance of Fernandez’s departure but insisted that the club must now concentrate on the players who remain at Stamford Bridge.
The Spanish manager stressed that major decisions at the club are made collectively, suggesting that Fernandez’s departure was not the result of an isolated decision by one individual. With the transfer window now closed, Alonso believes the priority must be ensuring that Chelsea’s existing squad remains fully focused on the season.
Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a reported £107 million after becoming one of the standout players during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph. He subsequently became a central figure in the Chelsea midfield and made a significant number of appearances for the London club.
His departure is therefore a major change for Alonso, who had initially expressed a desire to keep the midfielder when he was appointed Chelsea manager. Alonso had previously spoken positively about Fernandez and his qualities during the early stages of his tenure.
Despite losing one of their most recognisable midfielders, Chelsea did not manage to bring in a direct replacement before the transfer window closed. The club had been working on a potential deal for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, but that move collapsed late in the process, leaving Alonso to work with the midfield options already available to him.
The situation has raised questions about Chelsea’s squad depth, particularly in the centre of the pitch. However, Alonso has attempted to reassure supporters by highlighting the qualities available within his squad.
Players such as Moisés Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson, Reece James and Valentín Barco are among the options available to the manager. Alonso has also shown a willingness to trust younger players, potentially creating opportunities for academy prospects as the season progresses.
Chelsea’s summer transfer strategy has nevertheless produced significant changes. The club brought in several new players, including Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, while also reducing the size of a squad that had become increasingly difficult to manage.
Reports indicate that Chelsea completed the transfer window with substantial income from player sales, with Fernandez’s £125 million move to City becoming one of the biggest departures in the club’s history. The club also avoided the congestion of European football this season, giving Alonso more time to work with his squad between Premier League and domestic cup fixtures.
The timing of Fernandez’s departure could hardly have been more challenging, with Chelsea preparing for a difficult trip to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Alonso, however, appears determined not to allow the transfer saga to distract his players. Chelsea have made a promising start to the new Premier League campaign, winning their opening two league matches against Fulham and Brighton.
Their victory over Brighton was particularly dramatic, with Chelsea securing a 4–3 win in an entertaining encounter. The result continued the positive early momentum surrounding Alonso’s arrival despite defensive concerns.
The former Bayer Leverkusen coach is now tasked with ensuring that the loss of Fernandez does not destabilise that progress. His message is clear: the transfer window is closed, the squad has changed and Chelsea must concentrate on the players available to fight for results.
For Fernandez, the move to Manchester City reunites him with Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea manager who is now in charge at the Etihad Stadium. City have identified the Argentine as an important addition to their midfield as they look to strengthen their squad.
For Chelsea, meanwhile, the challenge is to demonstrate that Fernandez’s departure does not derail Alonso’s rebuilding project.
The manager’s immediate objective will be to maintain the team’s strong start, develop his midfield alternatives and ensure that the squad responds positively to the latest changes.
With a difficult Arsenal test approaching, Alonso knows Chelsea will have little time to dwell on the past. The focus now is firmly on the future, and the manager will hope his players can turn the disruption of Fernandez’s exit into motivation for the campaign ahead.
