The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has released a handover document from his time as Anambra State governor in response to claims that his administration left behind loans and other financial liabilities.

The document was made public on Wednesday by the Interim National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, Dr Yinusa Tanko.
According to the document, dated March 17, 2014, it contained a summary of Anambra State’s financial position as of the close of business on that day and indicated a net positive balance of more than N86bn.
The release followed recent claims by officials of the Anambra State Government that the state was still servicing debts and other liabilities inherited from previous administrations, including Obi’s.
The document reportedly listed eight outstanding external loans with a combined balance of about $92.35m.
The amount was estimated at about N127.37bn based on the June 30, 2026 exchange rate.
It also referenced other financial claims involving unpaid gratuities, pensions and related obligations.
The development comes after the Presidency challenged Obi to honour his pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if evidence emerged that his administration left unpaid liabilities when he handed over power.
Obi, who governed Anambra State from 2006 to 2013 before handing over to Willie Obiano, has repeatedly denied leaving unpaid obligations.
