The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has won all 21 local government chairmanship positions and 362 councillorship seats in the Anambra State local government election held on Saturday.
The Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, Genevieve Osakwe, announced the results in Awka, declaring all APGA candidates winners in their respective positions.
Osakwe described the election as peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible, saying it was conducted in accordance with the state’s electoral laws and guidelines.
She also dismissed reports that the Young Progressives Party, YPP, boycotted the election in Anambra East Local Government Area over alleged violence and malpractice.
According to her, the commission was not aware of any boycott, adding that the YPP chairmanship candidate in the area polled 1,658 votes, while the APGA candidate secured 50,169 votes to emerge victorious.
The ANSIEC chairman commended Anambra residents for their confidence in the commission and appreciated security agencies and the media for their support throughout the exercise.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected chairmen, Ayamelum Local Government Area Chairman, Emmanuel Igwebuike, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo, ANSIEC and security agencies for providing a conducive environment for the election.
