Anambra varsity suspends Anglican priest over alleged sexual misconduct

The management of Paul University, Awka, has suspended an Anglican priest and member of its academic support staff, Ven. Cornelius Eze, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.

The university announced on Friday that Eze, a Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, had been placed on indefinite suspension while internal disciplinary proceedings and investigations by security agencies continue.

The decision followed allegations brought before the university management on July 14, 2026.

The development comes amid the circulation of a viral video on social media, which allegedly shows a lecturer fleeing through a window after students forced their way into an office on campus. The footage, which has not been independently verified, has been widely shared online with claims that the lecturer was caught in a compromising situation with a student.

Although the university did not comment directly on the video or the circumstances surrounding it, it confirmed that it immediately invited security operatives to take over the matter after tensions rose among students.

In a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Rev. Godsplan Onukwufor, management said the suspension was a precautionary measure pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The institution stressed that it has zero tolerance for sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse of office and any behaviour capable of endangering the welfare of students and staff.

According to the statement, anyone found guilty of violating the university’s regulations or Nigerian law would face appropriate sanctions after due process.

The university also disclosed that counselling and psychological support were being arranged for the student involved and any other affected members of the university community.

It urged members of the public to avoid speculation or spreading unverified information that could interfere with investigations, assuring parents, students and staff of its commitment to maintaining a safe and morally sound learning environment.
