The All Progressives Congress (APC) has scheduled a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for July 24, 2025, to elect a new national chairman following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
This decision was confirmed during the Monday, June 30, 2025, National Working Committee (NWC) meeting presided over by Ali Bukar Dalori, who has assumed the role of Acting National Chairman of the party.
Ganduje, the former governor of Kano State, resigned on Friday, citing health reasons and the need to attend to urgent personal matters.
His resignation was formally presented to the NWC by the party’s National Secretary, Suraj Ajibola, who moved the motion for its acceptance.
In accordance with Article 14 of the APC constitution, the motion also appointed Ali Bukar Dalori, the Deputy National Chairman (North), as Acting National Chairman.
This is pending the NEC’s election of a substantive chairman.
Dalori, who hails from Borno State in the North-East, expressed humility and a strong sense of responsibility upon assuming office.
He pledged loyalty to President Bola Tinubu and emphasized the need for unity within the party during this transitional period.
Dalori described his appointment not as a personal victory but as a duty to consolidate the party’s gains and prepare for the 2027 elections.
He called on the NWC and party members to focus on good governance, democratic deepening, and strengthening grassroots structures across Nigeria.
A significant development emerging from the NWC discussions is the growing consensus that the North Central geopolitical zone should produce the next national chairman.
This move aims to rectify what party insiders describe as a past injustice when Abdullahi Adamu from North Central was replaced by Ganduje from the North West in February 2023.
The NWC believes that the resignation provides an opportunity to restore balance and representation to the North Central zone, which has been sidelined in recent leadership arrangements.
The APC has already notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the July 24 NEC meeting, which will formally ratify the new national chairman.
The NWC meeting on June 30 reviewed recent party developments and set the stage for this important event.
Key party officials, including the National Secretary Ajibola Basiru and National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, were present at the meeting held at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.
Dalori’s assumption of the acting chairmanship was directed by President Tinubu, who emphasized the need for a smooth transition and continuity in party leadership.
The president’s directive underscores the importance of stability within the ruling party as it prepares for upcoming electoral contests.
The July 24 NEC meeting is expected to be a decisive moment for the APC as it seeks to unify its ranks and position itself strongly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The choice of a chairman from the North Central zone is seen as a strategic move to balance regional interests within the party and heal internal divisions.
Party members and observers are closely watching the developments, anticipating that the new leadership will focus on consolidating APC’s governance agenda and strengthening its organizational structures nationwide.
In summary, the APC is navigating a critical leadership transition following Ganduje’s resignation.
Ali Bukar Dalori has stepped in as Acting National Chairman, with the party’s NEC meeting slated for July 24 to elect a permanent replacement.
The emerging consensus favors the North Central zone for the new chairman, reflecting the party’s commitment to regional equity and internal cohesion.
This period marks a pivotal moment for the APC as it aims to maintain its political dominance and prepare effectively for future electoral challenges.
