Armed separatists attack Cameroonian forces in Bakassi Peninsula

Share this:

Tension is rising along the Gulf of Guinea following a reported attack on Cameroonian security forces in the Bakassi Peninsula.

Local sources say suspected separatist militants believed to be aligned with pro-Biafra movements crossed into the Isangele subdivision earlier today, launching a coordinated assault on a patrol unit of the Cameroon Gendarmes at about 11 a.m.

According to preliminary accounts, at least three security operatives were killed during the confrontation.

The attackers reportedly overpowered the unit and made away with two gunboats stationed along the coastal waterways, raising concerns about maritime security in the already volatile region.

Security officials have yet to release an official statement, but reinforcements are said to have been deployed to the area, with patrols intensified across nearby creeks and border channels.

Residents have been urged to remain indoors as authorities work to stabilize the situation.

The Bakassi Peninsula, a region long marked by territorial disputes and cross-border tensions, has increasingly become a hotspot for armed activity, including piracy, smuggling, and militant operations.

Analysts warn that today’s incident could signal a dangerous escalation, particularly if armed groups begin targeting strategic coastal assets.
