Arsenal Suffer Blow as FA Rejects Max Dowman’s Three Match Ban Appeal

Arsenal have suffered a setback after the Football Association rejected their appeal against Max Dowman’s red card, confirming that the teenage midfielder must serve a three match suspension following his dismissal against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup.

The decision, announced on Thursday, October 29, means the Gunners will be without the 16 year old for their upcoming domestic fixtures against Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle United.

An independent FA Regulatory Commission dismissed Arsenal’s arguments that the sending off was wrongful and that the punishment was excessive. The governing body also confirmed that the written reasons behind the decision would be published in due course.

Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute of Tuesday’s fourth round encounter after kicking out at Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge. Referee Michael Salisbury deemed the teenager’s reaction to constitute violent conduct and showed him a straight red card.

Arsenal subsequently appealed the decision in an attempt to overturn the dismissal or reduce the resulting suspension. However, the FA’s ruling means the club’s challenge has failed, leaving manager Mikel Arteta to adjust his plans without the youngster for three domestic matches.

The incident occurred during an already disappointing evening for Arsenal, who were eliminated from the competition by their lower league opponents. The match finished 1-1 after normal time before Fleetwood secured a 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout to advance to the quarter finals.

Fleetwood had taken the lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi in the 21st minute before Viktor Gyokeres equalised for Arsenal shortly after the interval. Despite the Premier League side’s efforts to find a winner, the contest went to penalties, where Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch helped his team complete a memorable upset.

Dowman’s dismissal added further frustration to Arsenal’s cup exit, with the club now facing the consequences of the incident beyond their elimination from the tournament.

The suspension will see Dowman miss Sunday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool, followed by Arsenal’s home encounter with Hull City on November 7 and their away fixture against Newcastle United on November 21.

However, the ban applies to domestic competitions, meaning the teenager remains eligible for Arsenal’s Champions League fixtures during the suspension period. He can therefore still be considered for selection when the Gunners face Slavia Prague on November 4.

The ruling also comes at a challenging time for Arteta, with Arsenal managing concerns over their available attacking options. Dowman’s absence removes another potential option from the squad as the club prepares for a demanding sequence of domestic fixtures.

The teenager’s dismissal had already attracted attention following the match, particularly because it came after a physical challenge from Neal. Nevertheless, the FA commission rejected both arguments presented in Arsenal’s appeal, leaving the original disciplinary decision intact.

Arteta had emphasised the importance of emotional control when discussing the team’s preparations for the Fleetwood encounter. The incident has consequently highlighted the disciplinary challenges young players can face when dealing with the intensity of senior football.

For Dowman, the suspension represents a significant lesson early in his career. Although Arsenal attempted to challenge the decision, the FA’s verdict leaves the club with no immediate change to the punishment.

The Gunners must now turn their attention to the Premier League, beginning with Sunday’s difficult visit to Liverpool, while Dowman serves his suspension and awaits his return to domestic action.

The FA has yet to publish the commission’s full written explanation for rejecting the appeal. Arsenal have also not announced any further action following the ruling.
