Businessman Arthur Eze has praised the legacy of former Eastern Region Premier Michael Okpara, saying he prioritised public development over personal wealth.
Eze made the remark while reflecting on Okpara’s leadership and contributions to the development of the former Eastern Region, where his administration promoted agriculture, industrialisation and public infrastructure.
Okpara, who served as premier from 1959 to 1966, was widely associated with policies aimed at strengthening the regional economy and improving living standards.
His administration supported agricultural initiatives and industrial projects intended to create jobs, increase productivity and establish a stronger economic foundation for the region.
Eze’s comments highlight the importance of leadership that directs resources towards economic growth and public welfare rather than private enrichment.
The legacy also raises broader questions about how public officeholders can promote sustainable development, build institutions and create opportunities that benefit future generations.
Okpara remains an influential figure in discussions about governance and economic development in southeastern Nigeria, particularly for his emphasis on productivity, infrastructure and regional advancement.
