As sirens wail and missiles fall, UK races to bring its people home

The British government on Friday, June 20, 2025, announced that it will arrange charter flights from Tel Aviv to bring home UK nationals, including dual citizens, once Israeli airspace reopens, prioritizing the safety of everyone in the region.
With Israeli and Iranian forces locked in a dangerous air war, officials at Whitehall are urgently preparing for the evacuation of thousands of British and dual nationals currently in Israel.
Many are holidaymakers, business travelers, or visiting family members.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed on Friday:
“The UK will provide charter flights for British nationals from Tel Aviv when airspace reopens. Register your presence to receive further guidance.”
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office stressed the safety of British citizens remains its top priority.
The government recommends that those in Israel or the occupied Palestinian territories continue to follow local safety guidance and make departure decisions based on their individual situations.
Currently, thousands have registered their presence, though many, especially dual nationals, may not seek official assistance.
A No 10 spokesperson reiterated the need for all UK nationals to register via the Foreign Office so that they can be contacted with updates about flight arrangements
Why Special Flights?
Airspace Closure: Israel’s main airport, Ben Gurion, has been closed since the escalation of attacks between Israel and Iran, grounding all flights
Logistical Hurdles: While some British citizens are leaving via land crossings into Jordan and Egypt, the government is boosting support to manage these routes more safely
Evacuation Demand: Around 60,000 Brits reside in Israel, many of whom could be caught amid bombing alerts
Lives Caught Between Crisis
Since the air war began, Israeli cities have suffered rocket and missile strikes.
Dozens have been killed or wounded in Tel Aviv, Beersheba, and other areas.
On the Iranian side, a humanitarian monitoring group reports 657 killed, including civilians, and over 2,000 wounded.
Israel claims its strikes target Iran’s nuclear capabilities, while Iran maintains its nuclear work is for peaceful purposes.
The cycle of violence continues despite international calls for calm.
Criticism and Consular Care
The UK’s evacuation strategy has faced criticism.
Some British nationals have reported being left to find their own way out, often via land, while others, such as the dependents of diplomats, were evacuated earlier
A No 10 spokesperson clarified that embassy families were evacuated as a precaution.
However, most British staff remain at work in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to ensure ongoing consular assistance.
Why This Matters Globally
Escalation Risk: The Iran–Israel conflict threatens regional stability. Evacuation efforts reflect the potential spread of violence.
Universal Priority: Governments worldwide are watching how foreign nationals are being protected—honoring a universal expectation that your country will come for you in crisis.
Clear Advice: Others abroad can take note: register with your embassy, stay updated, and follow official guidance before jumping into risky situations.
What British nationals should do
Register with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to stay informed about flight opportunities.
Monitor local alerts, including Israel’s Home Front Command and civil defense warnings.
Be ready to travel to Tel Aviv once airspace reopens.
Plan land exits carefully, heading to Jordan or Egypt if it’s safe and feasible; logistical support is increasing.
Stay in contact with local authorities and the British Embassy or Consulate for help.
The Looming Window
With no set date for reopening of Israeli airspace, the situation remains unpredictable.
UK officials are working around the clock, coordinating with Israeli partners to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation.
Lammy is also in Geneva, engaging in high-level diplomacy with European and Iranian counterparts, while UK Opposition leader Keir Starmer urges global restraint to avoid further escalation
What Sets This Apart
Official Charter Flights: Different from costly or logistical commercial flights, these are dedicated for British nationals with embassy support.
Security-Driven Decisions: Based on real-time safety risks, not political statements.
No Blanket Advisories Yet: Diplomats haven’t issued a full evacuation recommendation—efforts are targeted at those seeking help.
In summary, the UK is preparing to repatriate citizens caught amid the escalating Israel–Iran conflict once travel becomes feasible.
With charter flights poised for takeoff and heightened support for those exiting via land, the message is simple: stay registered, stay informed, and stay safe.
