Barcelona made a powerful statement at the start of their La Liga title defence on Sunday, sweeping aside Elche 5-0 at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero in a performance that combined ruthless finishing, attacking quality and impressive control.
Raphinha led the demolition with two goals, while Fermín López also struck twice and new signing Karim Adeyemi opened his official Barcelona account on his competitive debut. Anthony Gordon also made a major contribution after coming off the bench, providing assists for two of Barcelona’s second-half goals.
The result gave Hansi Flick’s side an emphatic start to their campaign as Barcelona continue their pursuit of a third consecutive La Liga crown.
Raphinha Sets Barcelona on Their Way
Barcelona needed only 14 minutes to break Elche’s resistance.
Raphinha won a penalty after being fouled inside the box by Victor Chust, and the Brazilian captain stepped up confidently to send goalkeeper Matías Dituro the wrong way and put the visitors ahead.
The penalty was Barcelona’s first official goal of the 2026/27 season and immediately settled any early nerves.
Elche attempted to respond, but Barcelona’s pressing and movement continued to cause problems. The visitors repeatedly found space between Elche’s defensive and midfield lines, while Raphinha remained a constant threat on the left.
Adeyemi Announces Himself
Barcelona doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time.
In the third minute of added time, Adeyemi finished a move created by Raphinha to score on his competitive debut for the Catalan giants. The German forward showed excellent composure to turn Barcelona’s dominance into another goal just before the interval.
The 2-0 scoreline at half-time reflected Barcelona’s superiority, but the visitors were far from finished.
The result also represented a difficult night for Elche, who struggled to cope with Barcelona’s pace and movement in the final third.
Raphinha Strikes Again
Barcelona returned from the interval with the same attacking intent.
Their third goal arrived in the 67th minute when Raphinha completed his brace. Substitute Anthony Gordon played a key role, supplying the pass that allowed the Brazilian to finish and push Barcelona further out of Elche’s reach.
Raphinha’s contribution was particularly impressive. He finished the match with two goals and an assist, making him one of the undisputed stars of the night.
Fermín López Joins the Party
Barcelona’s fourth goal arrived just four minutes later.
In the 71st minute, Fermín López found the net after another dangerous attacking sequence, with Gordon again providing the assist. The young midfielder’s movement inside the penalty area caused problems for Elche, and his finish further underlined Barcelona’s attacking depth.
Fermín was not finished.
Eight minutes later, in the 79th minute, he scored again to complete his brace and make it 5-0. The two goals capped an outstanding individual display and brought the evening to a fitting conclusion for Barcelona.
Gavi Injury Casts a Shadow
Despite the emphatic victory, Barcelona did suffer one concern during the match.
Gavi was substituted at half-time after suffering a lower-leg injury. Pedri replaced him for the second half, leaving Barcelona supporters hoping that the midfielder’s problem will not prove serious.
Barcelona also introduced Gordon during the second half, and the summer signing immediately demonstrated his value by creating two goals.
Barcelona Send Early Warning
The 5-0 victory was more than three points for Barcelona. It was an early warning to their domestic rivals that Flick’s side remain determined to dominate Spanish football.
Raphinha provided the experience and end product, Adeyemi announced himself with a debut goal, Gordon supplied two assists and Fermín López finished the evening with a brace.
Barcelona’s defence also maintained a clean sheet, while Elche struggled to create enough clear opportunities to seriously threaten the visitors.
With five goals, a clean sheet and several new faces already making an impact, Barcelona could hardly have asked for a more convincing opening statement.
For Elche, it was a painful introduction to the new campaign. For Barcelona, it was a five-star performance that immediately placed the defending champions in the spotlight.
And if this display is an indication of what is to come, Barcelona’s rivals have already been given plenty to worry about.
