Barcelona delivered an impressive Champions League performance on Tuesday night, defeating Aston Villa 3-0 at the Spotify Camp Nou to end the English side’s perfect start to the competition.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring before Raphinha struck twice in the second half, as Hansi Flick’s men combined attacking quality, relentless pressing and clinical finishing to secure an important victory over Unai Emery’s side.

The result also ended Aston Villa’s winning run in the Champions League, with Barcelona moving ahead of the Premier League side in the league-phase standings.

Barcelona wasted little time making their intentions clear, taking the lead just seven minutes into the contest after capitalising on a costly defensive mistake from the visitors.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki attempted to play out from the back, but his distribution put João Gomes under pressure inside the penalty area. The midfielder subsequently played a careless pass across the danger area, allowing Yamal to intercept possession.

The teenage forward needed little invitation, taking a moment to compose himself before curling a beautiful left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner in the seventh minute. The goal gave Barcelona an early advantage and marked another milestone for Yamal, who became the teenager with the most goals in Champions League history, moving ahead of Kylian Mbappé.

Villa attempted to respond immediately, with Anthony Gordon driving forward and delivering a dangerous low cross that neither Raphinha nor Yamal could convert.

The visitors gradually grew into the contest and came close to finding an equaliser in the 19th minute. Nicolas Jackson released Johan Manzambi with a dangerous pass, but the forward failed to make proper contact with his effort from inside the penalty area.

Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García was subsequently forced into a more decisive intervention when Jackson found himself through on goal in the 20th minute. García rushed off his line and produced an excellent tackle outside his penalty area to prevent Villa from drawing level.

The English side continued searching for an equaliser, with Manzambi testing García again in the 31st minute after creating space for himself inside the Barcelona half. However, his effort went straight at the goalkeeper.

Villa’s defensive problems remained a concern, particularly when Suzuki attempted another risky pass out from the back in the 26th minute. Gordon seized possession and unleashed a powerful angled effort, but the goalkeeper recovered to make an important save.

The visitors also struggled with Barcelona’s attacking movement, particularly Yamal, who repeatedly troubled Ian Maatsen down the right flank. Maatsen eventually received a yellow card in the 11th minute after bringing down the Barcelona youngster.

Emiliano Buendía was also booked in the 30th minute for a foul on Fermín López, while the contest became increasingly heated towards the end of the first half.

A flashpoint arrived in the 43rd minute when Jackson and Pau Cubarsí became involved in a physical challenge near the halfway line. The incident developed into a brief confrontation involving several players, prompting a VAR review for a possible red card.

The referee ultimately decided against a dismissal, instead showing yellow cards to Jackson and Raphinha for their respective involvement in the incident.

Villa went into the interval trailing by one goal but having created enough opportunities to suggest that a comeback remained possible.

Barcelona returned from the break determined to increase their advantage, and Yamal immediately threatened again. The youngster raced towards the byline in the 46th minute, forcing Suzuki to rush off his line and block his effort from a tight angle.

The hosts eventually doubled their lead in the 52nd minute through Raphinha, although the goal came with an element of fortune.

After Barcelona recovered possession around the edge of the penalty area, the ball reached the Brazilian forward, who took a couple of touches before firing a low effort towards goal. His strike took a deflection off Pau Torres, changing direction and wrong-footing Suzuki before finding the bottom corner.

With Barcelona now leading 2-0, Emery responded by introducing Ibrahim Mbaye, Ross Barkley and Leon Goretzka in a triple substitution in the 62nd minute, replacing Buendía, Manzambi and João Gomes.

However, the changes failed to prevent Barcelona from extending their advantage.

Two minutes later, Raphinha completed his brace with an excellent finish to make it 3-0. João Cancelo produced a brilliant piece of attacking play down the left, beating his marker before delivering an exquisite outside-of-the-boot pass across the face of goal.

Raphinha timed his movement perfectly, arriving inside the six-yard box to meet the delivery with a first-time finish that gave Suzuki no chance in the 64th minute.

It was a superbly executed attacking move that effectively ended Villa’s hopes of recovering from the deficit.

Barcelona continued to threaten, with Fermín López forcing Suzuki into a smart one-handed save in the 67th minute after another attempt to play out from the back went wrong.

Flick subsequently made a triple substitution in the 70th minute, introducing Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Gabriel Jesus for López, Pedri and Raphinha. The Brazilian forward appeared disappointed to leave the pitch, having been denied the opportunity to chase a hat-trick.

Villa nearly pulled one back two minutes later when Goretzka got his head to a corner delivery, but his effort struck the far post with Jackson unable to reach the rebound.

Yamal also came close to adding a fourth in the closing stages, while Suzuki produced another important save to deny the youngster in the 90th minute.

Despite Villa’s late attempts, Barcelona comfortably protected their advantage until the final whistle, securing a deserved 3-0 victory.

The result moved Barcelona to nine points from four Champions League matches, while Aston Villa suffered their first defeat of the competition after winning their opening three fixtures.

For Flick, it was another impressive demonstration of Barcelona’s attacking potential, with Yamal’s creativity and Raphinha’s clinical finishing proving decisive. Villa, meanwhile, will regret their defensive mistakes and missed opportunities, particularly during a first half in which they had genuine chances to return to the contest.
