Bayern Munich Break Contract Rule for Harry Kane After Ballon d’Or Win

Bayern Munich are reportedly prepared to make an exception to their long-standing contract policy for players over 30 as they close in on a new deal for Harry Kane following the England captain’s historic Ballon d’Or triumph.

The German champions are keen to secure the striker’s future beyond his current contract, which expires in June 2027, with negotiations reportedly progressing towards an extension until 2029.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, an agreement is close, although the contract has yet to be signed. German journalist Raphael Honigstein has also indicated that the negotiations are at an advanced stage, with only the final details remaining to be resolved.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Honigstein explained that Bayern were nearing an agreement with the 33-year-old forward, although the final formalities had not been completed.

Kane reportedly favoured a three-year extension that would keep him at the Allianz Arena until shortly before his 36th birthday. However, Bayern are understood to prefer a two-year extension, potentially with an option that would provide flexibility for both the player and the club.

The proposed arrangement represents a departure from Bayern’s traditionally cautious approach to offering long-term contracts to players approaching the latter stages of their careers.

Former Bayern chief executive and current supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge acknowledged that the club’s position on older players could change when a footballer continues to demonstrate exceptional value.

Rummenigge explained that Bayern would traditionally favour one-year contracts for players over 30 but stressed that Kane represents a special case because of his performances and physical condition.

He also highlighted the striker’s impressive availability since arriving in Germany, noting that Kane had suffered only one injury in three years.

Bayern’s approach to Kane contrasts with their treatment of other experienced players. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who recently turned 40, received a one-year contract, while Thomas Müller departed the club in 2025 before moving to Vancouver Whitecaps.

Kane’s remarkable scoring record has strengthened Bayern’s determination to retain him. Since joining the Bundesliga giants from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, the England international has established himself as one of their most influential players, delivering consistent goals and performances across competitions.

According to the figures cited in the report, Kane scored 146 goals during his first three seasons at Bayern and has already registered 10 goals in 12 matches this season.

His contribution has made him central to the club’s attacking plans, while his experience and leadership have further increased his importance to the squad.

The contract negotiations have also taken place against the backdrop of Kane’s Ballon d’Or success on Monday. The England captain reportedly scored 73 goals for club and country during the period considered for the award, finishing ahead of Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal.

His triumph made him the sixth Englishman to win the prestigious individual honour and ended Bayern’s 45-year wait for another Ballon d’Or winner. The club’s previous winners included Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer and Rummenigge.

The award represents another milestone in Kane’s career, having followed his move to Germany with an exceptional run of goalscoring performances.

For Bayern, extending his contract would provide continuity in attack and help protect their investment in a player who has quickly become a defining figure of the team.

However, the length of the proposed agreement remains an important consideration. While Kane reportedly prefers a longer commitment, Bayern’s preference for a two-year extension would reflect the club’s desire to balance his outstanding performances with the risks associated with offering long contracts to ageing players.

Neither the reported extension nor its final terms have been officially confirmed as signed. Nevertheless, the progress of negotiations suggests that Bayern are willing to adjust their usual approach to keep Kane in Munich.

With his Ballon d’Or recognition reinforcing his standing in world football, the England captain appears increasingly likely to remain a central part of Bayern’s plans beyond 2027, provided the two parties complete the agreement.
