Bayern Munich’s remarkable scoring streak finally came to an end as the Bundesliga champions were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by newly promoted Schalke, ending their run of scoring in 59 consecutive competitive matches.
The goalless encounter at the Veltins-Arena produced one of the biggest surprises of the Bundesliga weekend, with Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius playing a starring role as the hosts frustrated one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking teams.
For Bayern, it was a night when the goals simply refused to arrive.
The German champions dominated possession for long periods but repeatedly struggled to find a way through a disciplined Schalke defence. Even the introduction of some of Bayern’s biggest attacking stars after half-time could not change the outcome.
According to reports, Bayern had not failed to score in a competitive fixture for 59 matches, making Saturday’s stalemate a significant statistical setback for Vincent Kompany’s side.
Luis Díaz had arguably Bayern’s best opportunities of the first half but could not take advantage.
The Colombian forward was played through on goal and found himself in a promising one-on-one situation with Karius. However, his effort drifted wide, allowing Schalke to breathe again.
Díaz later came close once more when he attempted to lift the ball over the Schalke goalkeeper. This time, the attempt appeared destined for the net, but the home defence managed to clear the danger before the ball crossed the line.
Those missed opportunities would eventually prove costly.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany had made several changes to his starting lineup, with Harry Kane and Michael Olise beginning the game on the bench.
The decision reflected Bayern’s demanding schedule and their desire to manage the workload of some of their key players early in the season.
Kane was introduced at the start of the second half as Bayern searched for the breakthrough, while Olise and Jamal Musiala were brought on with around 35 minutes remaining.
Musiala’s return was particularly significant.
The Germany international was making his first appearance of the season after suffering seizures during two pre-season matches. His introduction immediately added more creativity and movement to Bayern’s attack as the visitors increased the pressure on Schalke.
But Karius refused to surrender.
The former Liverpool goalkeeper produced several important saves to keep the newly promoted side alive. One of his biggest interventions came late in the match when he stretched to make a superb fingertip save from a powerful Kane effort that appeared to be heading towards the top corner.
It was exactly the type of moment Bayern needed to break the deadlock, but Karius had other ideas.
Bayern continued throwing players forward as the final whistle approached, but Schalke’s defensive organisation remained intact.
Konrad Laimer also came close when he sliced an effort into the side-netting from close range, but the Austrian midfielder could not provide the finishing touch Bayern desperately needed.
When the referee finally ended the contest, Schalke’s players celebrated as though they had won the match.
For a newly promoted side that had endured a difficult return to the Bundesliga, securing a point against the reigning champions represented a huge statement.
It was also Schalke’s first point of the season.
For Bayern, however, the draw brought several unwanted milestones.
The result ended their remarkable 59-match run of scoring in competitive fixtures, while it also brought an end to their run of finishing a Bundesliga matchday at the top of the table that had stretched to 67 matchdays.
Kane also endured a frustrating evening.
The England captain remains on 98 Bundesliga goals after making his 96th appearance in the competition. He therefore remains just two goals away from joining the exclusive 100-goal club.
The draw also means Bayern surrendered valuable momentum at the top of the table, with Borussia Dortmund, Freiburg and Elversberg moving ahead of them in the standings after their respective results.
Despite the disappointment, Bayern will not have much time to dwell on the result.
Their attention now turns towards the Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Bodø/Glimt before returning to Bundesliga action against another newly promoted side, Elversberg, on September 13.
For Schalke, meanwhile, the 0-0 draw could prove to be a defining moment in their campaign.
Holding Bayern without a goal is an achievement few teams can claim, and Karius’ heroics between the posts ensured that the Bundesliga champions left Gelsenkirchen with just one point.
After 59 straight competitive matches with at least one goal, Bayern finally drew a blank.
And on a night when the champions expected to make another statement, Schalke instead produced the headline.
