ABUJA: parents suits NDLEA for 2billion Naira

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 62-year-old Lagos-based businessman for attempting to smuggle cocaine to China through the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Media and Advocacy at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, Femi Babafemi.

According to the agency, the suspect was apprehended on Saturday during the outward clearance of passengers travelling to China via Addis Ababa aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET940. A body scan conducted by NDLEA officers revealed the presence of illicit substances in his system, after which he was placed under medical observation.

While under observation, the suspect expelled a total of 95 jumbo-sized wraps of cocaine in seven separate excretions. The drugs were said to weigh approximately 1.589 kilograms.

During interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he is engaged in the clothing and auto spare parts business in Lagos. He reportedly told investigators that he resorted to drug trafficking in a bid to raise funds to complete a residential building he is constructing in his hometown of Iwollo, Enugu State.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA also recorded several major arrests and seizures in separate operations across the country.

In the Federal Capital Territory, operatives recovered 627.7 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, from a makeshift warehouse located within Fums Plaza, Kubwa.

In another operation, officers foiled an attempt to smuggle methamphetamine concealed in MP3 speakers from Enugu to Abuja and Kaduna. The consignments were intercepted on Friday, February 6, in a commercial bus. A follow-up operation in Zuba, FCT, led to the arrest of Ebube Okeke, the owner of one of the parcels containing 173 grams of methamphetamine. Additional suspects — Evans Ugwu, Mohammed Eze Arinze, and Friday Michael — were arrested in Kaduna on Saturday, February 7, while attempting to collect a second consignment weighing 28 grams.

In Taraba State, NDLEA operatives intercepted a 32-year-old suspect, Yusuf Abubakar, at the Dan-Anacha patrol point in Gassol Local Government Area. He was found conveying packs of Hollandia yoghurt from Lagos to Mubi, Adamawa State, some of which were used to conceal 1.8 kilograms of methamphetamine.

In Oyo State, a 29-year-old Beninoise national, Shuaibu Abdulrahman, was arrested at Ibudo-Igboho village, Sooro Kishi, with 149.6 kilograms of skunk concealed in rice shafts. In a separate operation in Ibadan, Adeniyi Adeola, also known as Prince, was arrested at Agbeni Market with 10,820 ampoules of pentazocine injection and 117,820 capsules of tramadol recovered from his vehicle.

Also in Ibadan, a suspected drug kingpin, Jimoh Nurudeen, 40, was arrested alongside his accomplice, Ogundipe Yusuf, 27, at the Badeku area. Items recovered included precursor chemicals, quantities of skunk, drug production equipment, ₦7.4 million in cash, and two vehicles.

In Kwara State, NDLEA operatives intercepted a fuel tanker transporting petrol from Lagos to Maiduguri and recovered 395,400 capsules of tramadol concealed within the truck. The driver was taken into custody.

In Imo State, a couple — Izuchukwu Azubuike, 37, and Ifunaya Mmadueke, 32 — were arrested in Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area, with 203 kilograms of skunk.

Officers in Ondo State recovered 420 kilograms of skunk from a bush at Ikun Akoko, while in Lagos State, operatives of the NDLEA Marine Command seized 31 wraps of cocaine concealed in a handbag from a suspect who arrived by boat from Côte d’Ivoire at Yekeme, Badagry.

Additional arrests were made in Lagos and Enugu states, with various quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine, skunk, tramadol, and other illicit substances recovered, alongside cash.

The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks across the country and called on members of the public to continue supporting the agency with timely and credible information.

CAC removes over 400,000 companies from record

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has removed over 400,000 inactive companies from its registry in 2025 as part of efforts to improve transparency and boost investor confidence.

The Registrar-General of the CAC, Hussaini Magaji, SAN, made this known on Saturday in Abuja during the commission’s monthly fitness walk, organised as part of activities to mark its 35th anniversary.

Magaji explained that most of the affected entities were companies that had not filed statutory annual returns for several years and were no longer in operation, noting that such firms posed risks to economic integrity.

He said: “In 2025 alone, we deregistered over 400,000 companies from our records. These were largely companies that had become inactive and failed to meet statutory obligations, including filing annual returns.

“Such entities pose threats to economic operations. Cleaning up the register was necessary to build confidence and ensure that Nigeria has a credible and reliable corporate registry.”

He said the deregistration is part of the CAC’s ongoing reforms to maintain a credible and reliable corporate registry, attracting domestic and foreign investors while curbing misuse of corporate structures for illegal activities.

He emphasized that a transparent register is vital for Nigeria’s economic growth.

The CAC has transformed into a fully digital, end-to-end service provider, allowing businesses to register and manage operations remotely, 24/7.

This digital shift supports the Federal Government’s ease-of-doing-business reforms.

In collaboration with SMEDAN, CAC facilitated free registration for 250,000 MSMEs in 2025, providing training and capacity-building support. Improved staff welfare and digital transformation have enhanced service delivery.

Why Uzodinma was removed as convention chair — APC

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma
Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has replaced Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma with former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari as Chairman of the National Convention Central Coordination Committee.

Uzodimma, who was initially appointed chairman, has been reassigned as Treasurer.

Former Senate President Pius Anyim has been named Vice Chairman I, while Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is Vice Chairman II.

Meanwhile, APC officials explained that the leadership review was influenced by zoning considerations and the need to give a sense of inclusion to longstanding party figures.

A serving member of the National Working Committee of the APC according to PUNCH, said Masari and Anyim were regarded as experienced party elders and suitable to head the convention committee.

“The leadership of the party felt that the old leaders should be accorded the respect of holding the chairmanship position. That was why they settled for Alhaji Masari and also Senator Pius Anyim. They are experienced hands of the party and, for now, are not seeking political office. So, they may be more even-handed in bringing their experience to bear in those positions.

“The convention committee leadership change has nothing to do with whether somebody has something against Governor Uzodimma, contrary to speculations. That is why he was chosen as the treasurer of the committee. He will still play a very prominent role in the convention, particularly as the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum,” said the NWC member, who does not want to be identified because he was not authoritised to speak on the matter.

Also, another senior party figure stated that the APC relied on zoning considerations in choosing the new convention chairman.

He noted that with President Tinubu coming from the South, it was necessary to have a northern APC leader head the convention.

“When you also look at the composition of the committee, it is all-embracing. Aside from the governors, we have all the principal officers of the two chambers of the National Assembly, as well as former presiding officers who are members of the party. It also has all the former national chairmen who are still within the party,” the official said.

He added that the committee’s structure was designed to give various stakeholders a sense of belonging.

“The committee also has some other key functionaries from the Federal Executive Council, like the Ministers of Defence, Interior, Works and others.

“The convention is likely going to be built around consensus for the emergence of the National Working Committee. The process for the congress is already in top gear. People have been buying forms, and we expect to have a rancour-free convention,” he added.

The APC national convention is scheduled for March 27-28, 2026.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan headed by Reverend Father Jacob Shanet, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and appealed for prayers for those affected.

2Baba Picks Burna Boy Over Wizkid and Davido in Afrobeats Debate (WATCH VIDEO)

0

Nigerian music legend Innocent “2Baba” Idibia has sparked fresh conversation online after sharing his thoughts on a popular debate among Afrobeats fans: if you had to choose the music of just one between Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid, who would it be?

The question, which has divided listeners for years, is never simple. Each of the three global stars represents a different flavor of Nigerian excellence. Burna Boy is celebrated for his rich fusion of Afrofusion, reggae, and socially conscious themes. Davido is known for his energetic anthems, charisma, and hit-making consistency. Wizkid, on the other hand, commands a loyal fan base with his smooth melodies, international collaborations, and laid-back but powerful delivery.

For someone like 2Baba, who has watched the industry evolve from its early days into a worldwide movement, choosing just one can feel almost impossible. His reaction reflects the respect many veterans have for the new generation, artists who have taken African music to bigger stages and new audiences.

Fans quickly picked up on his comments, with social media lighting up as supporters of each superstar rushed to defend their favorite. Debates, playlists, and comparisons followed, once again proving how passionate Afrobeats listeners are.

Moments like this highlight not rivalry, but growth. The fact that Nigerian music lovers can argue over three different megastars dominating globally is, in itself, a win for the culture.

“Face of a Bully?” — Reactions Trail Priscilla’s Post After Flight Ticket Share

0

Social media is buzzing after Priscilla appeared to react to recent online tension with a pointed message that many followers believe was directed at a specific individual.

In a brief but loaded post, Priscilla wrote “face of a bully,” a phrase that immediately drew attention from fans who had been following the back-and-forth drama. What made the moment even more talked about was the claim circulating online that she had earlier shared a copy of a flight ticket, an action some viewers interpreted as escalating an already heated situation.

While Priscilla did not mention any names, commenters quickly began connecting the dots, suggesting that the message may have been triggered by how events unfolded after the ticket surfaced online. Supporters argued that if the post was indeed a reaction, it might reflect how deeply the situation affected her.

Others, however, cautioned against jumping to conclusions, noting that social media posts can be interpreted in many different ways and may not always be aimed at the person the public assumes.

The development has sparked intense debate across platforms, with fans split between defending Priscilla and urging everyone involved to de-escalate. Some believe public exchanges only add fuel to misunderstandings, while others feel that celebrities should be able to express themselves when they feel wronged.

As conversations continue, neither Priscilla nor the alleged subject of the post has offered further clarification. That silence has left room for speculation, keeping followers glued to their timelines for the next update.

For now, what remains certain is that a short phrase has once again shown how quickly online narratives can gain momentum, especially when emotions and public figures are involved.

15 Killed in Minibus Crash in Afghanistan

0

At least 15 people have died after a minibus veered off the road and plunged into a valley in Badakhshan province, northeastern Afghanistan, authorities said on Saturday.

A provincial police spokesperson explained that the vehicle lost control while travelling toward the provincial capital, Faizabad, citing poorly maintained and damaged roads as a contributing factor.

The victims included six children, five women, and four men.

Three of the injured later succumbed to their injuries in hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to 15.

Road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Afghanistan, often linked to deteriorating infrastructure, reckless driving, and limited traffic enforcement after decades of conflict.

In August 2025, 78 people, including more than a dozen children, were killed in Herat province when a bus carrying migrants returning from Iran collided with a motorcycle and a truck.

In a separate incident that same month near Kabul, 25 people died after a bus overturned, with officials citing driver negligence as the primary cause.

Authorities continue to call for improved road safety measures and infrastructure maintenance to prevent such tragedies.

King Charles to Host Tinubu in Landmark UK State Visit

0

Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for a state visit to the United Kingdom in March, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.

According to official information, the state visit will take place from March 18 to 19 at Windsor Castle. It will be the first UK state visit granted to Nigeria since 1989, when former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, visited Britain.

State visits are among the highest forms of diplomatic engagement and are typically reserved for countries with which the United Kingdom seeks to underscore strong political, economic and cultural ties. The visit is widely seen as a signal of the UK’s continued recognition of Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa.

Trade relations between both countries remain significant, with bilateral trade valued at more than £8 billion in the year ending October 2025. In 2024, the two countries also signed a Trade and Investment Partnership aimed at expanding business opportunities and strengthening economic cooperation.

President Tinubu has previously met King Charles on several occasions, including during a reception at Buckingham Palace in September 2024 and at the COP28 climate summit held in Dubai later that year. While details of the March programme have not yet been made public, state visits customarily include ceremonial events such as carriage processions and state banquets, alongside official talks between political leaders.

King Charles has maintained longstanding ties with Nigeria through the Commonwealth. Before ascending the throne, he visited the country four times as Prince of Wales—in 1990, 1999, 2006 and 2018. Queen Camilla accompanied him during the 2018 visit.

In 2023, the King’s Trust International, formerly known as The Prince’s Trust, launched an initiative in Nigeria focused on addressing youth unemployment and supporting young entrepreneurs.

The upcoming visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, particularly in areas of trade, investment, climate action and youth development.

Cinema Owners Respond to “Cabal” Claims: Movie Slots Depend on Demand, Not Conspiracy

0

The long-running debate about whether powerful interests influence which films remain in Nigerian cinemas has resurfaced once again. However, industry voices are pushing back strongly, insisting that business realities not secret cabals determine what stays on screen.

According to cinema operators, programming decisions are driven primarily by ticket sales and audience turnout. If a film fails to attract viewers, it is typically replaced with another title that shows stronger demand. The approach, they say, is not personal but purely commercial.

The conversation gained renewed momentum after media entrepreneur Mo Abudu publicly dismissed the idea of a coordinated effort to suppress certain productions. Her position aligned with what many exhibitors have maintained for years: cinemas survive on occupancy, and empty halls are simply not sustainable.

Owners argue that every screening represents a cost from staffing and electricity to marketing and logistics. When seats are not filled, losses accumulate quickly. As a result, priority naturally shifts toward films that audiences are actively paying to see.

While some producers say the system can feel harsh, particularly for smaller or independent projects, exhibitors maintain that they also face intense pressure to remain profitable. In their view, keeping a poorly attended film in rotation out of sympathy would threaten the viability of the business itself.

Industry observers note that this dynamic is not unique to Nigeria. Around the world, cinemas frequently adjust schedules based on performance metrics, sometimes within days of a movie’s release.

The debate has triggered mixed reactions online. Some creatives believe stronger collaboration and marketing support could help films build momentum before being pulled. Others argue that audience connection ultimately determines success and that filmmakers may need to rethink strategies for attracting viewers.

At its core, the issue highlights a fundamental truth about entertainment: demand drives supply. When moviegoers show up, screens remain. When they don’t, replacements follow.

For many within the exhibition sector, the message is straightforward, cinemas, like producers, are also trying to stay afloat.

If You Date Me Again, We’ll Do It Right” — Peller Makes Emotional Plea to Jarvis

0

Popular content creator Peller has stirred reactions online after publicly appealing to his former partner, Jarvis, with a heartfelt promise of change, growth, and a fresh start.

In the emotional message, Peller expressed regret over how things unfolded in their past relationship and admitted that maturity has reshaped his perspective. According to him, if given another chance, he would approach love differently, more privately, more intentionally, and with a stronger focus on building something lasting.

“If you date me back, we’ll never break up again,” he said, adding that he now understands the importance of protecting a relationship from outside pressures.

Peller suggested that too much public exposure may have contributed to their previous challenges. This time, he promised, they would keep their bond away from constant commentary, choosing instead to travel together, grow together, and enjoy each other without distractions.

The statement quickly caught attention across social media, with fans divided in their reactions. Some applauded his vulnerability, saying it takes courage to admit mistakes and fight for love in public. Others wondered whether promises made under the spotlight can truly translate into lasting change.

Supporters of the couple, however, are hopeful. Many believe time apart can bring clarity and that personal growth sometimes comes after loss. For them, Peller’s words sounded like someone who has reflected deeply and wants to make amends.

Neither Jarvis nor her representatives have responded publicly to the appeal, leaving followers waiting to see whether reconciliation could be on the horizon.

What is clear is that Peller’s message has reopened conversations about second chances, accountability, and whether love can be rebuilt stronger after heartbreak.

For now, fans can only watch and wait.

Plateau Govt Confirms Free, Statewide Availability of Anti-Snake Venom for Victims

0

The Plateau State Government has reaffirmed that Echitab Polyvalent Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) is readily available, widely distributed, and provided completely free of charge to all snakebite victims across the state.

This assurance was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director-General of the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Management Agency (PS-DMCMA), Pharm. Kim Jerry Bot, who stressed that snakebite cases are treated as medical emergencies, with no life expected to be lost due to cost, lack of access, or treatment delays.

According to the statement, the state has established a well-coordinated supply chain that has ensured adequate stocks of Echitab ASV in strategic hospitals, general hospitals, and designated treatment centres.

The arrangement guarantees prompt treatment for victims in both rural and urban communities, without imposing any financial burden on patients or their families.

The government further disclosed that sufficient quantities of the anti-venom are currently in stock and that distribution is ongoing across all 17 Local Government Areas and approved treatment centres in the state.

Health workers, the statement added, have been directed to administer the anti-venom immediately upon diagnosis to improve survival outcomes.

PS-DMCMA also issued a stern warning that any health facility, staff member, or individual found withholding, diverting, or charging patients for the life-saving drug will face decisive sanctions.

“The lives of Plateau citizens are priceless,” the statement declared.

The initiative was described as a reflection of the compassionate and people-centred leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, noting that by making Echitab ASV free, the administration has reinforced the principle that healthcare in Plateau State is a right, not a privilege.

With this intervention, Plateau State is positioning itself as a model for effective and conscience-driven leadership in public healthcare delivery across the country.

Hospitals and health facilities yet to receive their allocation have been advised to collect supplies from the PS-DMCMA Pharmagrade Warehouse, ensuring they come with appropriate cold-chain equipment for proper storage.

The statement concluded that the distribution plan, approved by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, has been fully outlined and communicated to all relevant stakeholders.

Angela Okorie Donates Pediatric Medications to Children at Suleja Prison Days After Release (WATCH VIDEO)

0

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has taken a humanitarian step that is earning praise across social media, donating pediatric medications to babies and young children living with their mothers at Suleja Correctional Facility, just days after regaining her freedom.

The actress, known for her outspoken personality and dramatic screen presence, shifted attention from controversy to compassion as she returned to support one of the most vulnerable groups within the prison system, children who began life behind bars through no fault of their own.

According to sources close to the visit, the donation included essential medicines aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of infants and toddlers in the facility. These supplies are often in short demand, making contributions from individuals and organizations crucial.

Observers described the gesture as deeply symbolic. Rather than retreating from public view following her recent ordeal, Okorie chose to step forward with an act of service, signaling empathy for incarcerated mothers and their children.

Many Nigerians reacted warmly to the development, commending the actress for remembering those still inside while she herself adjusts back to life outside the prison walls. Supporters say the move reflects gratitude, resilience, and a desire to give back.

Children in correctional centers frequently face unique challenges, from limited access to healthcare to overcrowded conditions. Advocacy groups have long called for greater awareness and support for their needs, noting that early medical attention can significantly shape their futures.

By directing her effort toward pediatric care, Okorie’s donation shines a spotlight on that conversation. Fans online say the visit serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can carry powerful meaning.

While the actress has yet to release an extensive statement about the outreach, images and reports from the facility have already begun circulating, with many describing the moment as touching and timely.

For Angela Okorie, the visit may mark the beginning of a new chapter one where compassion and community impact stand alongside her entertainment career.

Doja Cat Urges Celebrities to Embrace Mystery in Blunt New Message

0

Doja Cat has never been one to filter her thoughts, and her latest comments about fame and oversharing are sparking major conversation across the entertainment world.

In a fiery statement aimed at fellow public figures, the Grammy-winning star argued that many celebrities reveal too much of themselves online and, in doing so, weaken the very intrigue that makes audiences fascinated with them in the first place. Her message was simple: pull back, say less, and let mystery work in your favor.

According to Doja, constant access can make stars feel ordinary. When every detail of a celebrity’s life is broadcast daily opinions, relationships, routines, conflicts, the magic can fade. Familiarity, she suggested, can reduce the excitement that once drew fans in.

The singer’s perspective challenges the current culture of hyper-visibility, where artists are often encouraged to livestream, tweet, post, and respond in real time to remain relevant. While that approach can build loyalty, Doja hinted that it may also create burnout and overexposure.

Her remarks immediately ignited debate online. Some fans applauded her honesty, saying the industry has become saturated with information and that mystique is rare in the age of social media. Others pushed back, arguing that openness helps humanize celebrities and strengthens connections with supporters.

Doja Cat herself has had a complicated relationship with fame and internet culture. Over the years, she has alternated between intimate engagement with fans and periods where she distances herself from the spotlight. Because of that history, many observers see her latest stance as coming from lived experience rather than theory.

Entertainment analysts note that mystery once played a huge role in star power. In earlier eras, limited access meant audiences relied on carefully crafted appearances, interviews, and performances. Today, however, the curtain is almost always open.

Whether celebrities will take Doja’s advice is another question entirely. The demand for visibility remains high, and algorithms tend to reward those who share frequently. Still, her blunt commentary has reopened an old conversation: does seeing everything make the public value stars less?

Love it or disagree with it, Doja Cat has once again proven she knows how to get people talking.

Managing Blood Sugar Levels: Expert-Backed Strategies for Long-Term Health

0

Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is essential for overall wellbeing and the prevention of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and kidney complications. Health experts say that while blood sugar fluctuations are normal, consistently high levels can pose serious health risks if not properly managed. Fortunately, lifestyle choices play a major role in keeping blood sugar within a healthy range.

Adopt a Balanced and Nutritious Diet

Diet remains one of the most effective tools for controlling blood sugar. Nutritionists recommend consuming meals rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, and lean proteins. Foods high in refined sugar and processed carbohydrates—such as sugary drinks, pastries, and white bread—should be limited, as they cause rapid spikes in blood glucose levels. Including fiber-rich foods helps slow sugar absorption into the bloodstream and improves overall glucose control.

Engage in Regular Physical Activity

Exercise helps the body use insulin more efficiently, allowing sugar to move from the bloodstream into the cells for energy. Health professionals advise at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, cycling, or dancing, on most days of the week. Regular exercise also supports weight management, which is closely linked to better blood sugar control.

Maintain a Healthy Body Weight

Excess body weight, particularly around the abdomen, can increase insulin resistance. Losing even a small percentage of body weight has been shown to significantly improve blood sugar levels. Combining a healthy diet with regular physical activity is considered the most sustainable approach to weight management.

Stay Hydrated and Limit Sugary Beverages

Drinking enough water supports healthy metabolism and helps the kidneys flush out excess sugar through urine. In contrast, sugary beverages such as sodas, sweetened juices, and energy drinks can cause sharp increases in blood glucose levels and should be avoided or consumed sparingly.

Manage Stress and Prioritize Quality Sleep

Chronic stress triggers the release of hormones that can raise blood sugar levels. Health experts recommend stress-management techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, prayer, and adequate rest. In addition, getting 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night helps regulate hormones that influence blood sugar and appetite.

Monitor Blood Sugar and Follow Medical Advice

For individuals living with diabetes or prediabetes, regular blood sugar monitoring is crucial. This helps track how the body responds to food, activity, and medication. Medical professionals also stress the importance of adhering to prescribed medications and attending routine health check-ups.

A Preventive Approach to Better Health

Experts agree that controlling blood sugar is not only vital for people with diabetes but also important for the general population. By adopting healthy eating habits, staying active, managing stress, and seeking regular medical guidance, individuals can maintain stable blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of long-term health complications.

Falcons Rookie James Pearce Jr. Arrested After Alleged Incident Involving Rickea Jackson(WATCH VIDEO)

0

Atlanta Falcons rookie James Pearce Jr. has been taken into custody following a serious incident that authorities say involved his ex-girlfriend, WNBA Los Angeles Sparks player Rickea Jackson.

According to law enforcement officials, the situation unfolded after what has been described as a domestic dispute. Police allege that Pearce pursued Jackson in his vehicle and, during the course of the encounter, intentionally struck her car in an effort to stop her from reaching a police station.

Authorities say the pursuit ended when Pearce allegedly crashed his own vehicle while attempting to flee responding officers. He was then arrested at the scene.

Investigators have listed several felony charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, and fleeing or attempting to elude police. A vehicle can be classified as a deadly weapon under the law when it is allegedly used in a manner capable of causing serious harm.

Officials emphasized that the accusations remain part of an active investigation, and Pearce is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

News of the arrest has sent shockwaves through both the football and basketball communities, given the high profiles of the individuals involved. Pearce, a recent addition to the Falcons roster, is considered one of the league’s promising young talents, while Jackson has built a strong following as a standout figure in the WNBA.

Neither Pearce nor Jackson had issued a public statement at the time of reporting. Representatives for the Falcons and the Sparks are also yet to provide detailed comments, though teams in similar situations often say they are gathering information before responding.

The incident has quickly become a major topic online, with fans expressing concern and calling for due process while acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations.

As the legal process moves forward, more details are expected to emerge regarding what led to the confrontation and the events that followed.

MDCN Debunks Claims of Stranded House Officers, Clarifies Housemanship Placement Nationwide

0

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has dismissed recent media reports claiming that about 2,000 house officers are stranded without job placements annually, describing the assertion as inaccurate and based on a misinterpretation of facts presented during its recent budget defence before the Senate Committee on Health at the National Assembly.

According to the Council, it informed the Senate Committee that approximately 4,000 house officers are currently enrolled under the centralised housemanship scheme, which operates across 48 Federal Government hospitals nationwide.

The MDCN further explained that, beyond the federal scheme, there are 81 additional accredited hospitals—comprising State Government, Military, and Private health institutions—that also provide housemanship training. Although these hospitals operate outside the federal centralised scheme, they remain fully accredited by the MDCN and continue to offer valid housemanship placements.

The Council stressed that it is misleading to describe doctors undergoing training outside the federal scheme as “stranded.” MDCN accreditation, it noted, guarantees that these institutions meet the required standards for housemanship training, with available placement opportunities across the country.

In total, the MDCN revealed that Nigeria currently has 129 accredited hospitals where newly qualified medical doctors can commence their housemanship immediately. Any delays experienced by some graduates, the Council clarified, are largely due to personal preferences for specific locations or institutions—particularly those within the federal centralised scheme—rather than a shortage of available training positions.

During the budget defence session, the MDCN also advocated for the expansion of the centralised housemanship scheme to include accredited non-federal hospitals. This, it explained, would promote greater equity in remuneration and access by allowing house officers in State, Military, and Private hospitals to benefit from the federal funding framework presently limited to federal institutions.

Reaffirming its commitment, the MDCN stated that it remains dedicated to ensuring that all eligible medical and dental graduates have access to quality housemanship training in accredited institutions across Nigeria. The Council also pledged continued transparency, accuracy, and sustained efforts to strengthen the nation’s medical training and regulatory systems.

The MDCN urged the public and stakeholders to rely on verified information issued by the Council and to disregard misleading interpretations that do not accurately reflect the realities of housemanship training and placement in Nigeria.

Understanding Vitamins: Why These Essential Nutrients Matter for Good Health

0

Vitamins are among the most widely discussed and essential nutrients required for human health. Despite their popularity, many people still ask fundamental questions: What exactly are vitamins? Why does the body need them? How can we obtain adequate amounts, and what happens when intake is insufficient? This article breaks down the basics of vitamins, their classifications, functions, sources, and the health consequences of deficiencies.

What Are Vitamins?

Vitamins are organic substances required in small amounts to support specific biochemical processes in the body. Unlike some nutrients, the human body cannot produce sufficient quantities of most vitamins on its own, making dietary intake essential.

For a substance to be classified as a vitamin, it must meet three key criteria: it must be organic, needed only in small amounts for specific biochemical functions, and obtained primarily through the diet.

Classes of Vitamins

Vitamins are broadly classified into two groups: fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins.

Fat-Soluble Vitamins

Fat-soluble vitamins dissolve in fats and oils and are stored in body fat and the liver. They include vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Vitamin A (Retinol)

Vitamin A plays a vital role in vision, skin health, and immune function. Deficiency can lead to eye problems such as night blindness and dry eyes. Major dietary sources include liver, carrots, and palm oil.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D exists mainly in two forms: D1 and D2. It is essential for calcium absorption and maintaining healthy bones. Deficiency can result in osteomalacia in adults and rickets in children. Sources include sunlight exposure and fish oil.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Vitamin E functions primarily as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage. A deficiency may cause nerve and muscle damage. It is commonly found in vegetable oils and nuts.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K exists in two forms, K1 and K2, and is crucial for proper blood clotting. Deficiency can lead to excessive bleeding. Green leafy vegetables are the primary sources.

Water-Soluble Vitamins

Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water and are not stored in the body. Excess amounts are excreted in urine, making regular intake necessary. This group includes the vitamin B-complex and vitamin C.

Vitamin B-Complex

The B vitamins play essential roles in energy production, nerve function, and cell metabolism.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): Supports nerve function and energy metabolism. Deficiency causes beriberi.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Important for cell growth and metabolism. Deficiency may result in a sore tongue and cracked lips.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin): Aids energy production and cell repair. Deficiency leads to pellagra.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid): Required for coenzyme A formation. Deficiency can cause fatigue.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine): Involved in amino acid metabolism. Deficiency may lead to anemia and neuropathy.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin): Supports fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Deficiency is associated with hair loss and dermatitis.

Vitamin B9 (Folate): Essential for DNA synthesis. Deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin): Crucial for red blood cell formation. Deficiency results in pernicious anemia.

Common sources of B-complex vitamins include whole grains, meat, and eggs.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Vitamin C is vital for collagen formation and immune support. Deficiency leads to scurvy. It is abundant in citrus fruits, tomatoes, and peppers.

Why Adequate Vitamin Intake Matters

Poor vitamin intake can lead to a range of health problems, from mild fatigue and skin issues to severe conditions such as anemia, bone disorders, and immune dysfunction. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein sources is key to meeting daily vitamin requirements.

As research continues to highlight the importance of micronutrients, understanding vitamins and their role in the body remains essential for long-term health and disease prevention.

US Court Sentences Nigerian Man Over $6m Inheritance Fraud

0

A Nigerian national, Tochukwu Albert Nnebocha, has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison in the United States for his role in a transnational inheritance fraud scheme that defrauded hundreds of victims of over $6 million.

The sentencing was announced on Saturday by the Office of Public Affairs of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to U.S. authorities, the scheme targeted elderly and vulnerable individuals across the United States, with more than 400 victims falling prey to the operation over several years.

Court records revealed that Nnebocha worked alongside multiple co-conspirators operating across different countries to carry out the fraud. The operation relied heavily on deception and emotional manipulation, with victims falsely led to believe they were beneficiaries of large inheritances.

Prosecutors said the conspirators sent hundreds of thousands of personalised letters to elderly Americans, posing as representatives of a Spanish bank. The letters claimed that the recipients were entitled to multimillion-dollar inheritances from deceased relatives.

Victims were subsequently instructed to pay various fees, including taxes, delivery charges and administrative costs, before the supposed inheritance could be released. In reality, no such inheritance existed.

“In total, the defendant and his co-conspirators defrauded over 400 U.S. victims of more than $6 million,” the Department of Justice said.

At sentencing, the court imposed a 97-month prison term on Nnebocha, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay over $6.8 million in restitution to the victims.

Nnebocha’s conviction followed a coordinated international law enforcement effort. He was arrested in Poland in April 2025 following a request by U.S. authorities and was extradited to the United States in September 2025.

In November 2025, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud under U.S. federal law.

U.S. officials noted that Nnebocha is not the only Nigerian national convicted in connection with the scheme. In July 2025, another Nigerian, Ehis Lawrence Akhimie, was sentenced for his role in the same fraud operation.

Authorities said the case forms part of a wider crackdown on international fraud networks targeting American citizens. Eight co-conspirators from the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal and Nigeria have already been convicted and sentenced.

The investigation was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Homeland Security Investigations, with support from the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs and Polish law enforcement.

U.S. prosecutors reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling cross-border fraud syndicates, noting that similar cases involving Nigerian nationals have resulted in lengthy prison sentences in recent years.

Supporters of former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have proposed a joint presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The proposal was announced on Friday in Kano State amid growing efforts by opposition figures to form broad-based alliances capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected re-election bid.

Speaking to journalists on behalf of several Kwankwaso support groups, Abba Sadauki Gwale said the suggested Obi–Kwankwaso ticket was aimed at building a strong national coalition by combining Peter Obi’s support base in the southern part of the country with Kwankwaso’s political influence across the North.

Mr Gwale noted that such an alliance could present Nigerians with a viable alternative to the current administration, which he blamed for widespread insecurity, economic hardship and rising hunger.

He argued that leveraging the regional strengths of both political figures could help address Nigeria’s pressing challenges and promote inclusive national development.

“As loyal supporters of Senator Kwankwaso, we call on Nigerians to support an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance,” Mr Gwale said, adding that the proposed partnership could transcend party boundaries if necessary.

According to him, the joint ticket, if realised, would focus on economic reforms, youth empowerment and other socio-economic issues affecting the country.

The proposal has generated discussions within political circles and on social media.

However, neither Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, nor Senator Kwankwaso has publicly responded to or endorsed the idea.

Political analysts observe that previous attempts to align the two politicians have faced challenges, including disagreements over leadership structure and party affiliation.

The development comes as opposition parties and political actors intensify consultations and strategic realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as Nigerians closely watch how the political landscape may evolve.

Nigerian Varsity Bans Activities of Neolife on Campus

0

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has banned the activities of Neolife and the Faith Heroic Group (FHG) within its campuses, citing concerns over student welfare and campus security.

The directive was announced in an official memo signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Charles Adeleye, and made available on Thursday.

According to the memo, the activities of the two groups have generated “serious discomfort, fear, unnecessary tension and unwarranted pressure” among students and staff, thereby undermining the institution’s peaceful and conducive academic environment.

The university also warned students to completely disengage from the groups, stressing that failure to comply would attract serious sanctions in line with FUTA’s existing regulations.

“All students of the university are hereby directed to refrain from all activities of the Faith Heroic Group and Neolife on campus. Failure to comply with this directive will attract serious penalties in accordance with extant university regulations,” the memo stated.

Neolife, which presents itself as a wellness and nutrition company, has faced widespread criticism and allegations of unethical practices.

Investigations have accused the organisation of exploiting young Nigerians, including university students, through deceptive recruitment strategies that promise high-paying jobs and quick financial success.

A previous investigation by The PUNCH revealed that many students were lured into Neolife’s network under the guise of legitimate employment opportunities, only to be pushed into a multi-level marketing structure that often leaves participants in debt and encourages them to abandon formal education.

FUTA said its decision followed a review of the recruitment methods and operational activities of both groups, concluding that their presence was not in the best interest of students or the university community.

“Arising from the review of their activities and mode of recruitment, the university has resolved that the operations of these groups are not beneficial to the institution or its students,” the statement added.

The ban takes immediate effect.

Gunmen suspected to be cultist have shot dead the President-General of Ogidi Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Ikwuka Okoye, along with his relative whose identity has yet to be confirmed.

The attack occurred on Friday night at a school field within the community, according to information gathered by Diaspora Digital Media.

The killings reportedly took place shortly after local vigilante operatives arrested and killed a suspected leader of a cult group operating in the area.

This development has sparked speculation that the community leader and his relative were targeted in a retaliatory attack by members of the cult group.

However, Diaspora Digital Media could not independently verify the motive behind the killings.

Police Confirm Attack

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, a Superintendent of Police, said the command regrets the attack and the loss of lives.

According to Mr. Ikenga, preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may be linked to the recent arrest and killing of a notorious cultist in the community.

“Following the report, police operatives swiftly took over the scene of the incident and commenced investigations,” he said.

“The Command is currently working with eyewitness accounts and other available intelligence to identify and arrest the perpetrators.”

He assured residents that security efforts have been intensified and urged them to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.

“Further developments will be communicated in due course,” he added.

Worsening Insecurity in Anambra

Anambra State remains one of the states worst affected by insecurity in Nigeria’s South-east region.

The situation has been worsened by the combination of cult-related violence and attacks linked to separatist agitation.

The outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been accused of involvement in several deadly incidents in the state and across the region, though the group has repeatedly denied responsibility for such attacks.

Beyond separatist-linked violence, cultism remains a major security concern in Anambra. In recent years, the state has recorded multiple cult-related killings and clashes.

In June last year, police foiled a cult initiation ceremony in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area, arresting six suspects.

In October 2024, four persons were killed during a clash between rival cult groups in the same community.

Similarly, in July 2023, suspected cultists reportedly beheaded a rival cult leader in another Anambra community, while in November 2022, six people were killed in Awka during a gun battle between rival cult groups.

Cultism, also referred to as secret society activities, is outlawed in Nigeria. In Anambra State, it is prohibited under the Anambra State Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Law, 2024.

Under the law, membership of a secret cult constitutes an offence, regardless of whether the individual is found in possession of a weapon.

Convicted offenders face life imprisonment or a minimum of 21 years in prison without the option of a fine.

It reported that Nigeria recorded over 127,000 new cancer cases in 2022.

It noted that more than 79,000 people died from cancer in the same period.

It said nearly sixty-two percent of diagnosed patients did not survive.

Executive Director Runcie C.W. Chidebe blamed systemic healthcare gaps for the high mortality.

He rejected claims that patients alone cause late detection.

He listed weak infrastructure as a barrier to timely diagnosis.

He identified limited oncology personnel as another obstacle.

He said transportation difficulties delay many patients.

He added that poverty prevents early hospital visits.

He called for a coordinated national screening system.

He said Nigeria currently relies on scattered screening efforts.

He explained that a national plan would invite eligible citizens for tests.

He said hospitals should routinely offer breast and cervical checks.

He argued that structured screening reduces late-stage detection worldwide.

He pointed to Nigeria’s HIV testing model as proof of feasibility.

He said coordinated campaigns once improved HIV awareness nationwide.

He urged leaders to apply similar commitment to cancer control.

Project Pink Blue continues to support patients through counselling.

The NGO also provides navigation services for treatment access.

It conducts research and advocacy in rural communities.

Health experts say early detection greatly improves survival chances.

They insist that prevention costs far less than treatment.

They warn that delayed action will increase national health burdens.

Advocates want sustained investment in diagnostic centres.

They also want modern equipment in public hospitals.

They believe stronger systems will save thousands of lives yearly.

They insist that government leadership remains critical to success.

They conclude that Nigeria must act quickly to reverse current trends.
