CBN to fine Banks N10m for using unaccredited cheque printers

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has imposed a N10 million fine on commercial banks that use unaccredited cheque printers or personalisers.

This sanction is part of the apex bank’s revised penalties for violating the Nigeria Cheque Standard (NCS) and the Nigeria Cheque Printers’ Accreditation Scheme (NICPAS).

Banks found using unaccredited printers will face a N10 million fine and immediate withdrawal of affected cheques. Repeat offenders will be fined N20 million and have their cheques withdrawn.

The CBN aimed to strengthen efficiency and safety within the Nigeria Clearing System and reflect current banking sector developments.

All banks and accredited cheque printers/personalizers are urged to comply with the revised guidelines.

Electoral Act: Opposition Lawmakers Fume Over Move to Adopt Senate’s Version

0

Opposition members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday criticised efforts to amend Clause 60 of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, describing the move as a setback for electoral transparency.

The disputed clause, previously approved by the House, provides for real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units to a central viewing platform managed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Pressure mounted earlier in the week, prompting the Committee on Electoral Matters to propose rescinding the earlier provision. Opposition lawmakers insisted that the House retain the original version mandating real-time transmission.

During plenary, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu sided with lawmakers of the ruling party who argued that the House should adopt the Senate’s version of the amendment.

Tensions rose in the chamber as opposition legislators protested, chanting slogans accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining electoral reforms.

The National Assembly has constituted conference committees from both chambers to harmonise differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill.

While the House version previously approved real-time electronic transmission of results, the Senate version allows manual transmission where real-time upload is not possible.

The dispute underscores ongoing divisions over the role of technology in Nigeria’s electoral process and broader concerns about transparency and credibility in future elections.

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has called on the United States government to return Nigeria to her indigenous ethnic nationalities.

MASSOB made the call in a statement issued by it’s leader, Comrade Uche Madu, which a copy was made available to Diaspora Digital Media.

It also acknowledged the intervention of President Trump’s administration and other United States congressmen in bringing attention to the systematic ethnic genocide against Christian-dominated communities in Nigeria by organized Fulani terrorist groups.

While commending Trump for the efforts of his administration and the US Congressmen who have raised their voices against the heinous acts of violence and persecution faced by Christians in Nigeria, MASSOB expressed readiness to engage with leaders of the United States and the broader international community toward achieving a permanent and lasting solution to Nigeria’s long-standing and intractable challenges through peaceful and lawful mechanisms, including the application of the United Nations principle of self-determination for indigenous peoples.

The statement reads: “The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) wishes to acknowledge the intervention of President Trump’s administration and other United States congressmen in bringing attention to the systematic ethnic genocide against Christian-dominated communities in Nigeria by organized Fulani terrorist groups.

“MASSOB is deeply grateful for the efforts of President Trump’s administration and the US Congressmen who have raised their voices against the heinous acts of violence and persecution faced by our people in Nigeria. The international community’s recognition of the ongoing atrocities committed by these terrorists is a significant step towards ensuring justice and protection for the innocent victims.

“We applaud the commitment of President Trump and the US Congressmen in addressing the plight of our people and calling for an end to the senseless violence that has plagued our communities. Their unwavering support and advocacy for the protection of our human rights and the preservation of our heritage is a testament to the values of freedom and justice that we hold dear.

“MASSOB stands in solidarity with the efforts of President Trump’s administration and the US Congressmen in seeking justice for the victims of ethnic genocide in Nigeria. We call on the international community to continue to pressure the Nigerian government to take concrete actions to end the violence and bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.

“MASSOB also look forward to deeper engagements with leaders of the United States and the broader international community toward achieving a permanent and lasting solution to Nigeria’s long-standing and intractable challenges through peaceful and lawful mechanisms, including the application of the United Nations principle of self-determination for indigenous peoples.
Historical precedents, such as the internationally supervised processes that produced lasting political settlements in the former Yugoslavia, demonstrate that carefully guided self-determination frameworks for Biafra can provide sustainable pathways to peace, stability, and coexistence.

“The support and advocacy of President Trump’s administration and the US Congressmen give us hope that justice will prevail and that the victims of ethnic genocide in Nigeria will finally receive the protection and justice they deserve.

“MASSOB urged the United States of America to return Nigeria to her indigenous ethnic nationalities before the British colonist amalgamated and yoked groups of ethnic strangers in this contraption called Nigeria.”

The Federal Government has donated N5 billion to the victims of the devastating inferno that razed parts of Singer Market in Kano on Saturday, bringing immediate relief to hundreds of the affected traders.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that Vice-President Kashim Shettima disclosed the donation during a sympathy visit to the market on Monday.

The visit followed last week’s fire outbreak, which destroyed goods and properties worth billions of Naira, leaving many traders in distress.

Describing the incident as a national tragedy, Shettima said the inferno was not only a loss to Kano State but to the entire federation.

The vice-president, who was accompanied by the Governors of Jigawa, Kebbi and Imo, offered prayers for the victims and prayed to the Almighty Allah to prevent the recurrence of such obnoxious disasters in the future.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Singer Market Traders Association, Junaid Zakari, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for what he described as a timely and generous gesture.

He pledged that the funds would be used judiciously to support the affected members and help restore business activities in the historic market.

Health Report: Experts Advise Caution With Certain Foods After Age 40

0

Turning 40 is widely regarded as a major life milestone, but health professionals say it is also a period when the body begins to undergo subtle metabolic and physiological changes. While these shifts may not be immediately noticeable, they can influence how the body processes certain foods and drinks. Nutrition specialists emphasize that paying closer attention to diet at this stage can help maintain energy levels, support organ function, and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

One of the primary concerns is the consumption of sugary drinks. Beverages such as soda, energy drinks, and even some packaged fruit juices can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. Over time, frequent spikes may contribute to weight gain, increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, and raise the risk of cardiovascular problems. Health experts recommend replacing these drinks with water, herbal teas, or natural homemade smoothies, which are gentler on metabolism and provide hydration without excess sugar.

Processed meats are another category that nutritionists advise limiting. Foods like bacon, sausages, and hot dogs often contain high amounts of sodium and preservatives. Regular intake has been linked to elevated cholesterol levels and increased strain on the heart. Leaner protein sources including fish, skinless poultry, and legumes are considered safer alternatives that still meet the body’s protein needs without the added health risks.

Fried and oily foods can also become more problematic after 40. As metabolism gradually slows with age, the body may find it harder to efficiently burn excess fat from greasy meals. This can lead to gradual weight gain and heightened blood pressure. Cooking methods such as baking, steaming, or grilling are widely recommended because they reduce unnecessary fat while preserving flavor and nutrients.

Refined carbohydrates, including white bread, pastries, and instant noodles, may also have a stronger impact on energy levels in midlife. These foods can cause fluctuations in blood sugar that leave individuals feeling tired or sluggish. Whole grains like oats, brown rice, and quinoa provide more stable energy, promote fullness, and support digestive health due to their higher fiber content.

Alcohol and caffeine intake should likewise be monitored more carefully. With age, the liver may take longer to process alcohol, making excessive consumption more taxing on the body and potentially affecting long-term organ health. Moderate drinking or choosing lighter alternatives—is often advised. Caffeine, while generally safe in small amounts, can interfere with sleep and heighten stress if consumed in excess, particularly as sensitivity increases over time.

Health professionals stress that turning 40 does not require drastic dietary restrictions, but rather thoughtful adjustments. Making balanced food choices, staying hydrated, and practicing moderation can play a crucial role in preserving vitality and preventing illness in the decades ahead.

“I Will Spend Any Amount to Get Justice” — VeryDarkMan Reacts to Disturbing Assault Case

0

Nigerian activist and Social commentator VeryDarkMan has publicly reacted to a disturbing video in which a woman shared her experience of being sexually assaulted in her own home.

In the emotional footage circulating online, the woman alleged that a stranger entered her residence and assaulted her while she was alone. She also claimed that after the incident, the suspect sent her a message admitting to the crime. According to her account, the attacker stated that he inflicted injuries on her in an attempt to manipulate the narrative of what happened.

Reacting to the video, VeryDarkMan expressed anger and vowed to support efforts to ensure the suspect is held accountable. He stated that he would commit personal resources toward seeking justice in the case.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for swift investigation and prosecution if the allegations are substantiated. Advocates have emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to handle the case through proper legal channels.

Sexual violence experts consistently stress that survivors should receive immediate medical attention, psychological support, and legal guidance. They also caution the public against spreading unverified details that could interfere with investigations or further traumatize victims.

As of now, authorities have not released an official statement confirming arrests or formal charges in connection with the allegations.

The case has renewed broader conversations about home security, community vigilance, and the urgent need for stronger protections for women. Many online users are urging a balanced approach, supporting the survivor while ensuring due process is followed.

Electoral reform: Police Fire Tear Gas at Peaceful Protesters in Abuja

0

Armed police officers on Tuesday dispersed protesters with tear gas at the entrance of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, disrupting a rally organised to demand mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

The demonstrators, who gathered under the banner #OccupyNASS, were calling for real-time electronic upload of polling unit results to the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve transparency and credibility in future elections.

The protest attracted civil society groups, activists, and citizens advocating electoral reforms.

Among prominent figures present were former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, and former presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo.

Witnesses said the protesters were addressing supporters and urging sustained advocacy when security operatives, reportedly led by the National Assembly Divional Police Officer, moved in to disperse the gathering.

Tear gas canisters were fired into the crowd, causing panic as demonstrators fled coughing and gasping for breath. Several protesters reportedly sustained injuries in the ensuing chaos.

Despite the initial dispersal, protesters regrouped near the Assembly gate in defiance of police action.

Reinforcements, including multiple police vehicles carrying armed personnel, later arrived and fired additional rounds of tear gas to break up the crowd.

The demonstrators chanted slogans including “We no go gree, Akpabio pass the bill” and “Our vote must count,” while carrying placards reading “Don’t alter the bill, pass it” and “Rigging election is a coup.”

Their demands were directed at Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the leadership of the National Assembly, whom they accused of stalling reforms critical to electoral transparency.

Protesters insisted they would continue to push for amendments to the Electoral Act that would mandate immediate electronic transmission of results, arguing the reform is essential to preventing electoral manipulation and restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

As of the time of filing this report, the police had not issued an official statement on the incident.

Anambra Govt Seals Shops Over Sit-at-Home Order

0

The Anambra State Government has sealed several shops at the Building Materials Market in Ogidi and the Electrical Parts Market in Obosi for two weeks after traders failed to open for business on Monday.

The enforcement action followed a monitoring visit by the Special Adviser to the governor on markets, Chief Evarist Uba, who inspected the markets as part of efforts to ensure compliance with the directive mandating full business activities on Mondays.

Uba said the closures were necessary to restore normal economic activities and reinforce Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s order ending the Monday shutdown that has disrupted commerce across the state.

He commended traders who complied with the directive, noting that a significant number of shops at the Obosi Electrical Parts Market opened for business, marking a departure from the weekly lockdowns that have hindered economic activity.

According to him, the monitoring exercise was aimed at assessing compliance levels and encouraging traders to support efforts to revive commercial activities in the state.

The affected markets are major commercial hubs, and the state government says the enforcement measure is intended to deter future non-compliance and sustain economic stability.

5 Signs You’re Not Drinking Enough Water

0

Water is essential for nearly every function in the human body, from regulating temperature to supporting circulation and digestion. Yet many people do not consume enough fluids daily, often overlooking early warning signals of dehydration. Health experts warn that failing to stay properly hydrated can strain the heart, kidneys, joints, and other vital systems, particularly in hot climates or during physical activity. Recognizing the body’s subtle cues can help prevent complications before they become serious.

Persistent Dry Mouth and Throat

One of the earliest and most noticeable signs of inadequate hydration is a constant feeling of dryness in the mouth or throat. This occurs because the body reduces saliva production when fluid levels drop. While lip balms or moisturizers may ease surface dryness, they do not address the underlying issue. Drinking water is the only effective way to restore proper hydration.

Dark Yellow Urine

Urine color is a simple but reliable hydration indicator. Pale or light-straw urine usually signals adequate fluid intake, while dark yellow or amber tones suggest the body is conserving water. When dehydrated, the kidneys retain fluid, producing more concentrated urine.

Frequent Headaches or Dizziness

Insufficient water can reduce blood volume slightly, which may limit oxygen flow to the brain. This can trigger headaches, fatigue, or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly. Chronic dehydration may also worsen migraines in individuals prone to them.

Dry Skin and Reduced Elasticity

Skin relies on proper hydration to maintain elasticity and a healthy appearance. Dehydrated skin may feel rough, appear dull, or lose its ability to bounce back quickly when gently pinched. Although moisturizers can improve surface texture, internal hydration is crucial for lasting skin health.

Joint Discomfort and Muscle Cramps

Water helps lubricate joints and maintain electrolyte balance. When fluid levels drop, joints may feel stiff and muscles may cramp more easily, particularly during exercise or in hot weather. Long-term dehydration can also increase the risk of kidney stones, as the body lacks sufficient fluid to dilute minerals in urine.

Why Hydration Matters

Proper hydration supports stable blood pressure, efficient circulation, temperature control, and waste removal. While individual needs vary depending on age, climate, and activity level, health authorities generally recommend drinking water consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until thirst becomes intense, as thirst itself is a late sign of dehydration.

The Bottom Line

Ignoring the body’s hydration signals can lead to discomfort and, over time, more serious health issues. Paying attention to these warning signs and maintaining regular fluid intake is a simple yet powerful step toward protecting overall health.

Jesse Jackson, a prominent figure in the American civil rights movement and a close ally of Martin Luther King Jr., has passed away at the age of 84.

His family confirmed he died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by loved ones, though no cause of death was disclosed.

Jackson’s family described him as a “tireless change agent” whose life-long commitment to justice, equality, and human rights shaped a global movement.

They urged the public to honour his legacy by continuing the fight for these values.

“Our father was a servant leader not only to our family but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the family stated.

Jackson’s activism spanned decades, including campaigns for the U.S. presidency in the 1980s, extensive voter registration drives, and leadership in civil rights initiatives. Even while battling health challenges in later years, including progressive supranuclear palsy and Parkinson’s disease, Jackson remained dedicated to social justice causes.

Public observances are planned in Chicago, with further details on memorial events to be shared by the family.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Jackson, their five children, and grandchildren.

Jesse Jackson’s enduring impact on civil rights, equality, and the fight for human dignity leaves a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Court to Hear Suit Seeking Deregistration of ADC, AA, and Other Parties

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned a suit seeking the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and Action Peoples Party (APP) to February 24, 2026.

The hearing, initially scheduled for February 16, 2026, could not proceed due to the presiding judge’s absence.

Court premises saw heightened activity as all parties and their legal teams were present.

The National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the ADC each engaged two Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), while the Accord Party was represented by one SAN. The other affected parties also had senior counsels in attendance.

Speaking after the session, the lead counsel for the NFFL, Yakubu Ruba (SAN), stated that the suit sought constitutional interpretation to further develop Nigeria’s electoral jurisprudence.

The NFFL filed the case in December 2025, challenging the recognition of the affected political parties over alleged failure to meet the constitutional thresholds required for their continued existence.

Ruba emphasized that the legal action is intended to strengthen adherence to the rule of law, enrich Nigeria’s electoral framework, and promote a more credible and functional political system.

Legal analysts expect intense arguments when the court resumes hearings next week.

Spain Probes X, Meta, TikTok Over AI-Generated Child Abuse Content

0

Spain has ordered prosecutors to formally investigate the major social media platforms X, Meta, and TikTok over the alleged circulation of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, signaling a major escalation in the country’s efforts to protect minors online.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the platforms, stating that their failure to safeguard children undermines mental health, dignity, and rights.

He said, “The state cannot allow this. The impunity of these giants must end.”

The investigation aims to determine whether these platforms violated Spanish laws that protect minors and restrict the dissemination of illegal content, particularly material created with emerging artificial intelligence technologies.

Earlier this month, Sánchez unveiled measures to combat online abuse, including a proposal to ban social media access for children under 16, citing the need to limit exposure to harmful content.

The Spanish action adds to growing European pressure on tech companies to tighten oversight of AI-amplified content, amid concerns that these tools make it easier to create and distribute illegal and exploitative material.

This development follows broader international scrutiny, with platforms like Meta and TikTok facing lawsuits and regulatory probes related to child protection and online safety

Ethiopia Demands Eritrea ‘Immediate Withdrawal’ of Troops From Its Territory

0

Diplomatic tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have intensified after Addis Ababa ordered Asmara to immediately withdraw its troops from Ethiopian territory, raising fears of a renewed conflict between the longtime rivals.

Ethiopian officials accuse Eritrea of supporting insurgent groups operating inside Ethiopia allegations Eritrea has denied.

In a letter dated Saturday, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos warned that recent developments suggest Eritrea has chosen “the path of further escalation.”

He demanded the withdrawal of Eritrean forces and an end to any collaboration with rebel groups.

The minister described the alleged military presence along Ethiopia’s northwestern borders and joint operations there as acts of outright aggression, rather than mere provocations.

Despite the sharp tone, Ethiopia signaled openness to diplomacy. Timothewos said the cycle of violence and mistrust could still be broken if Eritrea respects Ethiopia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Eritrean government has not issued an immediate response.

Relations between the neighboring Horn of Africa countries have long been tense. Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after decades of armed struggle.

A border war between 1998 and 2000 left tens of thousands dead.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed initially restored ties with Eritrea after taking office, a move that earned him the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

However, relations later deteriorated following disagreements over the peace arrangements that ended the 2020–2022 Tigray conflict.

The Tigray war killed an estimated 600,000 people, and the Pretoria peace agreement has not fully resolved regional tensions.

Ethiopian authorities now claim Eritrea is preparing for war and supporting armed groups fighting federal forces.

Eritrea, meanwhile, accuses Ethiopia of attempting to secure access to the Red Sea through the Eritrean port of Assab.

The escalating rhetoric has heightened concerns of renewed instability in the Horn of Africa.

Heartbreaking Account Sparks Outrage and Renewed Calls for Justice ( Watch Video )

0

Miss Mirabel has shared a deeply traumatic experience in which she says she was sexually assaulted by a stranger inside her own home. Her emotional account has sparked widespread outrage and renewed conversations about safety, justice, and support for survivors.

According to her narration, the incident occurred when she was alone and her neighbors were not nearby to offer help. She described feeling completely isolated and vulnerable during the attack.

Even more disturbing, she later received a message from the alleged attacker admitting to what he had done. In the message, he reportedly claimed he intentionally inflicted injuries on her in an attempt to create a false impression about her sexual history.

The account has left many people shaken, with social media users expressing anger and heartbreak over the cruelty described. Advocates say cases like this highlight ongoing concerns about personal safety, especially for women in their own homes — a place that should feel secure.

Sexual violence experts consistently emphasize that responsibility lies solely with the perpetrator. Survivors are never to blame for the actions of their attackers. Trauma from such incidents can have lasting psychological, emotional, and physical effects, and access to medical care, counseling, and legal support is critical.

Organizations that work with survivors stress the importance of reporting assaults to law enforcement and seeking immediate medical attention, not only for treatment but also for the preservation of evidence.

The story has also renewed conversations about community awareness, stronger security measures, and the need for swift investigative action when such allegations arise.

Above all, many are calling for empathy, accountability, and justice — and for survivors to be met with support rather than silence.

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, local crisis centers, law enforcement agencies, and support hotlines can provide confidential assistance.

Nigerian, US Troops Begin Joint Military Drills

0

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that Nigerian troops and about 100 United States military personnel have commenced joint training exercises and intelligence-focused cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening national security.

According to the DHQ, the collaboration is designed to enhance Nigeria’s operational capacity to counter extremist groups and protect vulnerable communities.

Earlier reports indicated that at least three US military aircraft delivered equipment and supplies to support counter-insurgency operations, with landings recorded at military bases in the North-East, including Borno State.

Purpose of the deployment

The DHQ stated that the deployment followed a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for military training support, technical assistance, and intelligence sharing.

“The arrival is planned and deliberate,” the statement said, noting that the cooperation emerged from engagements between Nigerian and US defence officials.

Advisory role, not combat operations

The US personnel were described as technical specialists serving strictly in advisory and training roles rather than combat operations.

The DHQ emphasised that all activities will be conducted under the authority and control of the Nigerian government and in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Strengthening counter-terrorism capacity

The joint exercises are expected to improve the military’s ability to identify and neutralise extremist threats while enhancing intelligence sharing and specialised technical capabilities.

The DHQ reiterated that the Armed Forces remain committed to defeating terrorist groups threatening Nigeria’s sovereignty and safety, assuring citizens of transparency in the ongoing military cooperation.

14 Killed as Boat Carrying Wedding Guests Capsizes in Kebbi

0
Boat capsizes of California coast, 3 dead, 5 missing.

At least 14 people have died after a boat conveying wedding guests capsized in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The incident occurred at Gumbi village shortly after passengers had escorted a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village.

The celebrants were returning when the overloaded boat reportedly overturned, throwing more than 100 passengers into the water.

Casualties and victims

Fourteen people including 13 women and one child were confirmed dead in the accident.

Survivors were rescued by local residents and emergency responders.

Government reaction

Governor Nasir Idris attended the funeral prayers for the victims and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the people of the emirate.

Represented by Yauri Local Government Chairman Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the community to accept the tragedy with faith.

“Nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator… God does what He wants at the time He wants,” he said while praying for the repose of the deceased.

All the victims were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about water transport safety and overcrowding in riverine communities across Kebbi State.

Road crash kills 14 wedding guests in abia

0

At least 14 wedding guests have died in a tragic road accident that cast a pall of grief over Umuahia, Abia State, over the weekend.

The victims were returning from a traditional marriage and wedding ceremony in Enugu when the coaster bus conveying them collided head-on with an articulated vehicle along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.

How the crash occurred

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened around 6 p.m. on Saturday, a few metres from the popular 4-Corner Junction. Fourteen passengers reportedly died on the spot, while others later succumbed to injuries in hospital. Several survivors remain hospitalised in Umuahia.

Preliminary accounts suggested the bus was allegedly driving against traffic while the trailer attempted to overtake a tricycle, resulting in the fatal collision.

Traders among victims

Most of the deceased were foodstuff traders operating at Bonny Street, by Owerri Road near Isi Gate in Umuahia. The groom, MacDonald Okechukwu, an indigene of Orlu, was reportedly among traders in the area. His bride is from Amagunze, where the wedding ceremonies were held.

A popular event host known as MC Counsellor, who anchored the wedding, was also among the victims.

When journalists visited Bonny Street, shops were shut as sympathisers gathered to console bereaved families.

Families recount losses

Miss Glory Chiamaka Orji, 27, who lost her father in the crash, said the family remained in shock.

Another trader disclosed that at least eight Bonny Street traders died, adding that one survivor in a coma lost both her mother and brother-in-law.

Medical response and appeal for support

Chairman of Bonny Street Traders Association, James Edeh, confirmed that 12 bodies were evacuated initially, while two remained in Enugu for identification. Several injured victims are receiving treatment in private hospitals in Umuahia, with others admitted at the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu.

He appealed to the Abia State Government to assist survivors with medical care.

In response, the state government expressed sadness over the incident and directed officials to identify victims and provide support to the injured and bereaved families.

The tragedy has plunged the trading community and affected families into deep mourning, once again underscoring the dangers on Nigeria’s highways.

HAPPENING NOW: Protesters Rally at National Assembly, Demand Electronic Transmission of Results

DDM News

0

(DDM) – Peaceful demonstrators gathered on Monday morning at the National Assembly Complex, calling for full electronic transmission of election results and rejecting any manual collation they believe could undermine credibility.

The protesters, who described their action as a pro-democracy assembly, said they wanted to protect the integrity of future elections across Nigeria. They carried placards and chanted slogans emphasizing transparency, accountability, and respect for voters’ choices.

Organizers framed the protest as a civic movement rather than a partisan event. Speakers told the crowd that credible elections remain central to democratic stability and public trust. They stressed that technology-driven result transmission would reduce disputes and limit opportunities for manipulation.

One of the coordinators, Daniel Ezekiel Perela, addressed participants and encouraged nonviolence and orderliness. He identified himself as an aspirant for the House of Representatives of Nigeria from Warri ahead of the 2027 elections and said young people must remain engaged in democratic processes.

According to him, the youth population has become more politically aware and organized. He told supporters that safeguarding votes goes beyond party lines and reflects a collective national interest. He urged authorities to strengthen systems that guarantee real-time, transparent result management.

The protest operated under the banner of Youth O’Clock Agenda, a youth-driven platform that advocates political participation and electoral reforms. Members said their goal was to promote peaceful civic action and constructive dialogue with institutions.

Security personnel monitored the gathering but did not interfere, as participants remained calm and orderly. Traffic around the assembly area flowed with minor adjustments, and no incidents of violence were reported.

Political observers note that debates over result transmission have intensified in recent election cycles. Supporters of electronic transmission argue it boosts credibility, while critics sometimes raise concerns about logistics, connectivity, and legal frameworks.

For many at the rally, however, the message stayed simple: protect the vote and strengthen democracy. As the crowd gradually dispersed, organizers promised more civic engagement activities focused on voter education and institutional accountability in the months ahead.

“I Work Too” — Raheem Okoya Responds to Public Criticism

0

Raheem Okoya, son of Nigerian billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, has addressed public perceptions about his lifestyle and role in the family business.

The 22-year-old, who serves as Executive Director of Eleganza Group, stated that media narratives often portray him unfairly as someone who only spends his father’s wealth. According to him, that perception does not reflect the full reality of his involvement in the company.

Raheem said he actively works within the organization and is not solely dependent on inherited privilege. He emphasized that he enjoys business and financial growth, adding that his interest in money is tied to productivity and enterprise rather than luxury alone.

Eleganza Group, founded by Razaq Okoya, operates across multiple sectors including manufacturing, household goods, plastics, and real estate. As part of the next generation of leadership, Raheem represents a transition phase in one of Nigeria’s long-established family-owned businesses.

Children of high-profile entrepreneurs in Nigeria often face public scrutiny, especially when they occupy executive positions at a young age. Discussions around merit, succession planning, and inherited influence frequently follow such appointments.

Raheem’s comments appear to be a response to ongoing social media criticism questioning whether his position is based on qualification or family ties. While he acknowledges being born into privilege, he maintains that he contributes actively to the company’s operations.

The remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting his right to defend his work ethic, while others continue to debate the broader issue of generational wealth and corporate leadership.

Signs of Breast Cancer You Should Never Ignore Anymore

0

Early detection remains one of the most powerful tools in reducing deaths from breast cancer, yet health experts warn that many patients still overlook subtle warning signs until the disease has progressed. According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, underscoring the importance of recognizing early symptoms and seeking prompt medical evaluation.

Medical professionals emphasize that breast cancer does not always begin with dramatic or painful symptoms. In many cases, the earliest signals are mild, gradual, or easily mistaken for hormonal fluctuations, skin irritation, or natural aging. These understated changes often lead individuals to delay seeking care, allowing the disease more time to advance.

One of the most recognized warning signs is the appearance of a new lump or area of thickening in breast tissue. While not all lumps are cancerous, specialists stress that no new mass should be ignored. The size, texture, or mobility of a lump cannot reliably determine whether it is benign or malignant; only clinical examination and diagnostic testing can provide certainty.

Health authorities, including the American Cancer Society, note that people frequently discover such lumps incidentally while bathing, dressing, or applying lotion. A common but dangerous response is to wait and see if the lump disappears. Physicians caution that this delay can narrow the window for early diagnosis, when treatment success rates are typically highest.

Beyond lumps, experts say other subtle changes may also signal concern. These can include unexplained swelling in part of the breast, persistent pain in one area, changes in breast shape, skin dimpling resembling an orange peel, or unusual nipple discharge. Although these symptoms do not always indicate cancer, they should never be dismissed without medical assessment.

Oncologists stress that awareness not fear is the goal. Recognizing early warning signs and acting promptly can dramatically improve outcomes. Individuals who notice any new or unusual breast change are advised to consult a healthcare professional as soon as possible, rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

Public health specialists conclude that listening to the body’s signals can be lifesaving. When it comes to breast cancer, what may seem like a minor change could be an early message that deserves immediate attention.

Brooklyn Beckham Unfollows Gordon Ramsay After Public Advice

0

Brooklyn Beckham has reportedly unfollowed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay on social media following remarks Ramsay made about family, legacy, and staying grounded.

Ramsay, who has previously mentored Brooklyn during his early ventures into cooking, publicly advised him to remember his roots and value the guidance of his parents. He also emphasized that parents will not always be present, urging younger generations to appreciate that support while they can.

The comments quickly gained attention online, with some interpreting them as fatherly advice and others viewing them as unusually direct.

Brooklyn, the eldest son of former footballer David Beckham and fashion designer Victoria Beckham, has built a public profile that spans photography, cooking projects, and brand collaborations. Ramsay had previously offered guidance as Brooklyn explored culinary interests, occasionally featuring him in cooking-related content.

Observers noted the social media unfollow shortly after Ramsay’s comments circulated. Neither Brooklyn nor Ramsay has publicly addressed the move.

The situation has sparked conversation about mentorship dynamics in the public eye, particularly when advice is shared openly rather than privately. Public figures often receive guidance from industry veterans, but reactions can vary when those discussions become visible to audiences.

For now, the development appears limited to social media activity, with no formal statements released by either party.

EFCC Detains El-Rufai as DSS Files Cybercrime Charges

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over alleged corruption, while the Department of State Services (DSS) has filed separate cybercrime charges against him.

Sources within the anti-graft agency said late Monday that the former governor “has a lot to answer for” and is likely to remain in custody as investigators continue questioning him over allegations tied to his tenure between 2015 and 2023.

El-Rufai honoured an EFCC invitation on Monday morning and was taken in for interrogation at the commission’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. Investigators are examining allegations of abuse of office, diversion of public funds and money laundering linked to loans and contracts awarded during his administration.

Probe linked to Kaduna Assembly report

A 2024 ad hoc committee set up by the Kaduna State House of Assembly had alleged that loans obtained under El-Rufai’s government were misapplied and due process was not followed in securing some facilities.

The committee claimed that about ₦423 billion was diverted and recommended his investigation and prosecution. El-Rufai has denied the allegations and previously challenged the findings.

Sources said the scale of interrogation may require a court-ordered remand to allow investigators more time to build a case.

DSS files cybercrime charges

Meanwhile, the DSS filed a three-count charge at the Federal High Court, Abuja, accusing El-Rufai of unlawfully intercepting the private phone communications of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

Court filings allege the former governor admitted during a live television interview that he and associates intercepted the NSA’s communications.

Authorities say the alleged act violates the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, and poses risks to national security.

Possible arraignment, ICPC invitation

Judicial sources indicated he could be arraigned soon in connection with the cybercrime allegations. In a related development, El-Rufai confirmed he had also been invited by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and is expected to appear before the commission.

Political reactions and protests

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of persecuting El-Rufai, describing the investigations as distractions.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters gathered at the Kaduna State House of Assembly demanding updates on the legislative probe into the former governor’s administration and urging transparency and accountability.

Security agencies say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that due process will be followed.

“I Carried the Secret Alone” — Woman Opens Up About Marriage, Silence and Lost Choice

0

At 28, she learned a truth that would quietly reshape her entire life: her marriage would never produce children.

From the outside, everything looked normal. Family gatherings continued. Smiles were exchanged. Prayers were said. But behind closed doors, she carried a burden no one else knew about. Her husband was medically unable to father children. Instead of exposing him, she chose silence.

Whenever her mother gently asked when she would conceive, she responded the same way: “God’s time is the best.” She never revealed the diagnosis. She protected her husband’s dignity, even when it meant absorbing the questions, the pity, and the pressure alone.

Her mother passed away without ever knowing the truth.

While she endured that private grief, life at home grew harder. Her mother-in-law repeatedly insisted there was nothing wrong with her son. The blame fell entirely on her. She was advised to pray harder, try herbal remedies, visit spiritual homes, and examine her own body for faults that did not exist.

Years of quiet endurance eventually reached a breaking point. One day, overwhelmed and exhausted, she spoke up. She revealed the truth.

Instead of understanding, she was accused of disrespect. Family members described her as disloyal for exposing a private matter. The narrative quickly shifted, from a woman who had protected her husband for years to a “bad wife” who embarrassed the family.

Now, at almost 46, her feelings about motherhood have changed.

She says the pain is no longer about not having children. What lingers is something deeper: the loss of choice. The decision about whether she wanted children was never truly hers. It was decided by circumstance, silence, and the weight of protecting someone else’s pride.

Her story reflects a broader reality faced by many women, where infertility is automatically assigned to the wife, where medical truths are hidden to preserve male reputation, and where speaking up can cost a woman her standing within the family.

Today, she says she has made peace with her life. Not because the journey was easy, but because she has finally chosen herself.

Warning Signs Your Lungs May Be in Poor Condition — Health Experts Stress Early Detection

0

Your lungs work continuously to supply oxygen to the body and remove carbon dioxide, making them essential for survival. Medical experts caution that when lung health begins to decline, the body often sends early warning signals. Recognizing these signs promptly can help prevent more serious respiratory complications and improve treatment outcomes.

One of the most noticeable symptoms is shortness of breath during everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or performing simple chores. Persistent breathlessness may indicate that the lungs are not functioning efficiently or that airflow is restricted.

Chest tightness or discomfort  especially when taking deep breaths or moving  is another symptom that should not be ignored. Specialists explain that this sensation can be linked to inflammation, airway irritation, or strain affecting the respiratory system.

Wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound while breathing, can also signal trouble. This often occurs when airways become narrowed or partially blocked, which may be associated with respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchial inflammation.

Frequent mucus buildup or persistent phlegm production is another potential warning sign. When this symptom continues over an extended period, it may point to chronic irritation, infection, or other underlying lung conditions that require medical evaluation.

Health professionals advise that anyone experiencing these symptoms should consult a qualified healthcare provider for proper assessment. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can help protect lung function and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Maintaining healthy lungs, experts add, involves avoiding smoking, limiting exposure to polluted environments, staying physically active, and attending regular medical checkups.

El-Rufai: DSS Reopens Dadiyata Abduction Case

Did El-Rufai and Ganduje Collaborate to Disappear Dadiyata?

Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has reopened investigations into the 2019 disappearance of Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, a government critic who vanished from his Kaduna residence on August 1, 2019.

A senior security source said the renewed probe has widened to examine alleged links between former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and members of his family.

Passport seizure linked to ongoing investigation

According to the source, the seizure of El-Rufai’s passport at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport last Thursday was a strategic move to prevent him from leaving the country amid the reopened investigation.

Authorities believe the former governor was aware of the probe and planned to return to Cairo after meetings with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

The passport action reportedly disrupted that plan.

Security officials stressed that the measure does not amount to an arrest but was taken as a lawful precaution while inquiries continue.

Cold case review and fresh leads

The investigation was reportedly revived following months of discreet intelligence work and fresh leads suggesting possible involvement of key actors during the period of the abduction.

Dadiyata, a lecturer at Federal University Dutsinma, remains missing more than six years after his disappearance, despite sustained international attention and pressure from human rights organisations.

During a recent interview on ARISE News, El-Rufai reportedly claimed knowledge of a police officer who confessed to participating in the abduction, alleging the team involved came from Kano.

He maintained he was unaware of Dadiyata before the incident and suggested that, if any government should be questioned, Kano authorities should be.

Security officials, however, described the claims as troubling, questioning why such information was neither reported nor acted upon if credible.

Investigators are also reviewing past social media posts by his sons, Bello and Bashir, which allegedly portrayed Dadiyata as a hostile critic of the family.

The DSS said it is collaborating with anti-corruption agencies on related matters involving former associates of the ex-governor.

Meanwhile, political figures and civil society groups have intensified calls for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dadiyata’s disappearance.
