Three police officers attached to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit of the Zamfara State Police Command have been killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected bandits exploded along the Anka-Bagega road in Anka Local Government Area.
The officers were reportedly on official duty when the blast occurred on Monday, in what authorities described as another tragic reminder of the security challenges confronting the state.
Reacting to the incident, the Zamfara State Government expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officers, describing them as heroes who died in service to the nation.
Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Nakwada, led a high-powered delegation to the funeral prayers held for the fallen officers at the Police Command Headquarters in Gusau.
The prayers, conducted according to Islamic rites, were led by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
Nakwada conveyed the condolences of the state government and people of Zamfara to the Inspector-General of Police, the state command, the bereaved families and the wider police community.
He prayed for Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear the loss.
The state government also pledged continued support for the families of the slain officers.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling insecurity, Nakwada said Zamfara would continue to work closely with security agencies to combat banditry and other criminal activities.
“This tragic incident will not weaken our resolve. Instead, it strengthens our determination to restore peace and security across the state,” he said.
Zamfara remains one of the states hardest hit by bandit attacks in Nigeria, with security forces carrying out sustained operations against armed groups operating across several local government areas.
