Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday as Alexander Isak continued his scoring run with the only goal of the Premier League encounter.

The Sweden international struck in the 57th minute to settle a tightly contested game and give Liverpool another important three points before the international break. The result also made it a successful return to Bournemouth for Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who previously guided the Cherries before moving to Anfield.

The match was far from a comfortable afternoon for Liverpool, particularly during the opening 45 minutes. Bournemouth started with energy and repeatedly looked capable of causing problems, while the visitors struggled to find their rhythm in the final third.

Liverpool’s best moment of the first half came through Bradley Barcola, whose effort was saved by Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic after taking a deflection. Dominik Szoboszlai also tested the hosts with a dangerous free-kick that went narrowly wide.

At the other end, Bournemouth created arguably the clearest opportunity of the opening period when Evanilson threatened at the near post. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson reacted sharply to make an important save and prevent the hosts from taking the lead.

The visitors therefore went into the interval with the score still 0-0, but there was a sense that the game could be decided by one moment of quality.

That moment arrived shortly after the restart.

Liverpool finally broke Bournemouth’s resistance in the 57th minute. Cody Gakpo did brilliantly to beat Adrien Truffert on the right side before sending the ball into the danger area. The delivery created confusion inside the Bournemouth box, and Alexander Isak was perfectly positioned to take advantage.

The Swedish striker reacted quickly and calmly finished from close range to put Liverpool 1-0 ahead. Wirtz was credited with the assist in the official match data, while Gakpo’s contribution to the attacking move was crucial.

The goal was Isak’s fourth of the season and continued his growing influence in Liverpool’s attack. He had struggled to make a major impact during parts of the first half but needed only one clear opportunity after the break to make the difference.

Bournemouth attempted to respond immediately, but Liverpool’s defence became increasingly difficult to break down. Virgil van Dijk helped organise the back line, while Jérémy Jacquet produced another composed defensive performance as Liverpool protected their narrow advantage.

Bournemouth continued to push forward, but their attacking moves lacked the final touch required to beat Alisson. Liverpool, meanwhile, became more disciplined and looked increasingly comfortable protecting the lead as the match progressed.

There were also several disciplinary moments during the encounter. Liverpool players booked included Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, while Kerkez was among those receiving multiple cautions according to the match statistics. Bournemouth also picked up several yellow cards, including bookings for Adam Smith, David Brooks, Lewis Cook, Marcus Tavernier, Alex Scott, Justin Kluivert, James Hill, Evanilson and Adrien Truffert.

Despite the pressure, Bournemouth could not find an equaliser. Liverpool’s defence remained compact during the closing stages, while the visitors also introduced fresh legs to help manage the game.

Isak was eventually substituted in the 81st minute, with Lewis Koumas coming on as Liverpool sought to maintain their defensive shape and protect the advantage. Trey Nyoni was also introduced for Wirtz as Iraola made changes to strengthen Liverpool’s control of the match.

There was no late drama at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth’s final attempts failed to produce the goal they needed, allowing Liverpool to celebrate a valuable 1-0 away victory.

The result means Liverpool head into the international break with another win and an unbeaten start to their campaign. More importantly, Iraola’s team demonstrated that they can collect points even when they are not at their most fluent going forward.

For Bournemouth, the defeat will be frustrating because they competed strongly for long periods and created opportunities, particularly before half-time. But Liverpool’s ability to produce a decisive moment through Isak ultimately separated the two sides.

It was not a spectacular Liverpool performance, but it was an efficient one. With Isak providing the finishing touch, Gakpo contributing to the decisive attack and Alisson making crucial saves when required, the Reds did enough to leave the south coast with all three points.

Final Score: Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool

Goal: Alexander Isak 57′

Assist: Florian Wirt
