Chelsea have received a significant boost ahead of the new football season after Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk was cleared to resume his professional career following a successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The 25 year old is now eligible to return to competitive football immediately after CAS overturned the four year suspension previously imposed by the Football Association over an anti doping violation. The ruling ends a lengthy legal battle that kept Mudryk out of action for almost two years and offers the winger a chance to rebuild his career at Stamford Bridge.
Mudryk had been provisionally suspended in December 2024 after a routine drug test conducted during international duty with Ukraine returned an adverse analytical finding for meldonium, a substance prohibited under the World Anti Doping Agency’s regulations. In April 2026, the FA imposed a four year ban after concluding disciplinary proceedings, prompting the player to challenge the decision before CAS.
After reviewing the case, CAS ruled in Mudryk’s favour, rescinding the original sanction and allowing him to return to football with immediate effect. Reports indicate that changes to anti doping testing thresholds and the evidence presented during the appeal played a key role in the final decision.
In his first public reaction after the verdict, Mudryk described the ordeal as the most difficult period of his career. The Chelsea forward expressed gratitude to those who stood by him throughout the process and said he was relieved to finally focus on football once again.
“I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future,” he said after the ruling.
Chelsea also welcomed the outcome, reiterating the club’s long standing support for the Ukrainian international. The Blues had consistently maintained confidence in the player while the appeal process was ongoing and are now expected to integrate him back into first team activities.
Mudryk joined Chelsea from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £89 million, making him one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history and the highest priced Ukrainian footballer ever transferred.
Before moving to England, Mudryk established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young attacking talents. A product of Shakhtar Donetsk’s academy, he gained widespread recognition for his explosive pace, close ball control and dribbling ability. His impressive performances in the UEFA Champions League attracted interest from several elite European clubs before Chelsea secured his signature.
Although his time at Stamford Bridge produced flashes of brilliance, Mudryk struggled to establish himself as a regular starter before his suspension interrupted his career. Nevertheless, Chelsea retained faith in his long term potential and chose not to terminate his contract during the disciplinary process.
The winger has reportedly maintained his physical condition throughout his absence and is expected to rejoin Chelsea’s preparations immediately. His return provides the club with another attacking option as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign under their current coaching setup.
