At least 21 people have been killed and 37 others injured after two buses collided in southern Niger Republic.
The accident occurred on Friday, about 55 kilometres from Madaoua, along the road leading to Maradi, according to Niger’s official news agency, ANP.
The injured victims were rushed to emergency departments at hospitals in Madaoua and Maradi, where they are receiving treatment.
One of the buses was reportedly carrying soldiers, although authorities have yet to release further details about the identities of those killed or injured.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The accident occurred as Niger continues efforts to reduce road crashes through public awareness campaigns.
According to the Nigerien Agency for Road Safety, more than 7,000 road accidents were recorded across the country in 2025, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and more than 4,400 serious injuries.
Speeding, drink-driving, poor road conditions and the bad state of some vehicles remain among the major factors blamed for road accidents in the country.
