A Lagos-based businessman and politician, Hon. Kelvin Gabriel, has raised concerns over construction activities around his property on Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Gabriel said the ongoing development on a neighbouring property had extended close to his compound, creating concerns over the safety of his building and property.

Speaking with journalists in Lagos, he alleged that construction materials had fallen into his compound on some occasions, causing damage to parts of his building and some of his vehicles.

He said the affected vehicles had to be taken for repairs, resulting in additional expenses.

Beyond the reported damage, Gabriel also questioned the distance between the construction site and his property.

He said he was concerned about whether the development was complying with applicable planning requirements, particularly provisions relating to building setbacks and air spaces.

DDM News gathered that building developments in Lagos are subject to planning approvals and building-control requirements, with relevant authorities responsible for monitoring compliance.

Gabriel said he had initially contacted the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) over the matter and was subsequently directed to the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA).

The businessman’s concerns come as construction activity continues across Ikoyi, one of Lagos’ established high-value residential and commercial districts.

He is seeking appropriate intervention over the situation and has raised questions about the impact of the neighbouring development on his property.

DDM News reports that Gabriel’s allegations concern a specific construction project and have not, from the available report, been independently established as violations by the relevant authorities.

The matter therefore remains subject to clarification from the agencies responsible for physical planning and building control in Lagos State, as well as the developers involved.

The dispute highlights the importance of compliance with planning regulations as construction expands in densely developed parts of Lagos.

For property owners, adherence to approved building plans, required setbacks and safety standards is particularly important where developments are located close to existing homes and other structures.

As the construction continues, attention is expected to remain on the relevant regulatory authorities and their assessment of the concerns raised by the businessman.
