CAN Calls for US Intervention as Insecurity Crisis Deepens

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed support for the United States’ decision to assist Nigeria in tackling the rising tide of killings and insecurity across the country.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President, made the remarks during the opening of the association’s Fourth Quarterly National Executive Council meeting in Jos on Tuesday. He described the nation’s spotlight for violent attacks as “painful” but said international attention may help spur decisive governmental action to protect lives and restore peace.

“Though we are pained that Nigeria is being spotlighted for such grievous reasons, if international focus is required to spur decisive action, the Christian community in Nigeria welcomes it,” Archbishop Okoh said.

The cleric reaffirmed CAN’s stance that there is an ongoing Christian genocide in the country. “CAN has spoken clearly and courageously on this matter, and we stand unwavering by our position,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Archbishop Okoh urged Christians to remain hopeful and united, citing their collective strength. He encouraged leaders to stay steadfast, prayerful, and courageous while continuing to sow seeds of hope amidst grief. Quoting scripture, he added: “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

He reiterated CAN’s commitment to advocating for justice and security for its members. “Let me assure you that CAN will not relent. We will continue to demand justice. We will continue to call for accountability,” he said.

The Archbishop also highlighted the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), calling for their return to ancestral lands. He described prolonged displacement as “a painful indictment on the national conscience.”

Archbishop Okoh praised Jos as the symbolic choice for the meeting, calling the city a land that “wept bitterly, prayed fervently, and yet continued to rise with steadfast faith.”
