Carrick Admits Man United Have Fallen Below Expectations After Poor Run

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has admitted that the club have fallen below expectations following a disappointing run of results, insisting that his players must rediscover the identity, discipline and work ethic associated with one of English football’s biggest clubs.

Carrick made the admission during his pre-match press conference on Friday, October 23, ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The manager’s comments came after United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, a result that intensified scrutiny of his leadership and raised fresh questions about the team’s direction under his management.

United have now gone seven matches without a victory across all competitions, leaving Carrick under increasing pressure to reverse their fortunes and restore confidence within the squad.

Reflecting on the team’s recent performances, the former United midfielder acknowledged that the club had not performed at the level expected of them.

“Recently we haven’t had a good time, I think that’s pretty obvious,” Carrick said, describing the defeat against Como as a painful experience.

He also admitted that Wednesday’s performance was unacceptable, expressing his disappointment at the manner in which his players approached the contest.

Carrick’s concerns extend beyond the results themselves. He believes Manchester United must demonstrate the character, commitment and collective responsibility expected from players representing the club.

The manager stressed that his responsibility was to ensure the team played in a manner that supporters could be proud of, particularly given the expectations attached to wearing the famous red shirt.

“My responsibility is to get a team on the pitch that represents this football club, and the supporters, and they can be proud of in the identity we show,” he said.

Carrick acknowledged that United had moved away from those standards in recent weeks and insisted that everyone at the club needed to recognise the problem.

He also emphasised humility, resilience and hard work as essential principles for rebuilding the team’s performances.

According to Carrick, Manchester United’s history has been shaped by individuals who understood the importance of dedication and collective responsibility rather than relying on reputation alone.

“There’s a resilience about this football club that runs very deep,” he said, reflecting on the traditions he experienced during his playing career at Old Trafford.

The manager also delivered a firm message about entitlement, insisting that neither players nor staff should assume that success comes automatically because they represent Manchester United.

He warned that hard work and humility must remain central to the club’s culture, adding that he would not allow those values to disappear under his leadership.

Carrick’s comments arrive at a difficult moment for United, whose recent struggles have been accompanied by criticism from within the squad.

Captain Bruno Fernandes reportedly questioned the manager’s tactics following the heavy defeat to Como, adding another layer of uncertainty ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture.

When asked whether he had considered dropping Fernandes for the Bournemouth match, Carrick refused to guarantee the Portuguese midfielder a starting place.

Instead, he emphasised that decisions would be made according to the team’s needs and the overall dynamics of the squad.

“The most important thing for me is the team, the squad and dynamics in the squad,” Carrick said, making clear that the interests of the club would take priority over individual considerations.

The situation has also renewed attention on United’s wider recruitment strategy after defender Lisandro Martínez reportedly raised concerns about the club’s hierarchy and squad investment. The defender later apologised for his remarks, and the matter was reported to have resulted in a club fine.

Nevertheless, Carrick’s immediate challenge is to improve performances on the pitch rather than allow the growing scrutiny to dominate the team’s campaign.

United’s upcoming encounter with Bournemouth offers an opportunity to respond, although the manager will need more than encouraging words to convince supporters that the club can recover from its current difficulties.

The players must demonstrate greater intensity, tactical discipline and consistency if they are to turn their season around.

For Carrick, the pressure is particularly significant because of the progress United made under his leadership last season. He guided the club to third place in the Premier League and helped secure Champions League qualification, raising expectations ahead of the current campaign.

That improvement provided a strong foundation, but the team’s recent performances have threatened to undermine the progress achieved.

Carrick remains convinced that Manchester United can recover, but he has acknowledged that the club must confront its shortcomings rather than make excuses.

Sunday’s meeting with Bournemouth will therefore represent an important test of whether his players can respond to the criticism, rediscover their fighting spirit and begin restoring the confidence that has deserted them in recent weeks.
