Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was taken to hospital for further medical examinations after suffering a frightening head injury during his side’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday.

The Argentine international was stretchered off following a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool, leaving players, coaching staff and supporters concerned about his condition.

The incident occurred during the second half when Everton delivered a free kick into Chelsea’s penalty area. Martínez came off his line to deal with the ball as Branthwaite attempted to reach it, but the two players collided heavily, with their heads appearing to make contact.

Both players immediately went to ground, prompting an urgent response from the medical teams. However, while Branthwaite eventually recovered sufficiently to continue playing after undergoing concussion checks, Martínez remained down as medical personnel attended to him.

The seriousness of the situation became increasingly apparent as treatment continued for approximately 10 minutes. The Chelsea goalkeeper received medical attention on the pitch before being carefully carried away on a stretcher, bringing an anxious pause to an otherwise competitive afternoon of football.

Martínez was subsequently taken to hospital for precautionary tests to establish the extent of his injury. Although the incident raised fears among Chelsea supporters, the goalkeeper was seen moving his arms as he was taken off the pitch, offering a reassuring sign amid the uncertainty.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso later provided an update, confirming that Martínez was conscious when he left the stadium.

“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious,” Alonso said, adding that the goalkeeper was undergoing precautionary examinations at the hospital.

The manager’s comments offered some reassurance, although further medical assessments remained necessary to determine the full extent of the injury. No confirmed diagnosis or recovery timeline had been announced in the immediate aftermath of the match.

The incident also created an unexpected opportunity for young goalkeeper Mike Penders, who replaced Martínez in the 73rd minute to make his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

Coming into the game under difficult circumstances, Penders faced the challenge of helping his side protect a narrow lead against an Everton team determined to respond. The young goalkeeper remained composed as Chelsea worked to preserve their advantage and eventually secured a clean sheet.

While the injury dominated the closing stages, Chelsea had already taken control of the contest through an early second-half goal from Portuguese winger Pedro Neto.

Just 44 seconds after the restart, Neto broke the deadlock in the 46th minute, finishing a move created by Jorrel Hato to give the visitors a crucial advantage.

The goal immediately changed the complexion of the match, forcing Everton to pursue an equaliser while Chelsea looked to maintain their defensive organisation and exploit opportunities on the counterattack.

Everton continued searching for a way back into the contest, but Chelsea held firm despite the disruption caused by Martínez’s injury. The lengthy treatment period also resulted in 11 minutes of added time, extending the tension for both teams.

Neto eventually settled the contest in the 90th minute, reacting quickly after Jordan Henderson’s free kick was blocked before finding the net for his second goal of the afternoon.

His brace secured all three points for Chelsea and handed Everton their first defeat of the Premier League season. The result also moved Chelsea above Everton into the league’s top four at the time of the match.

However, the final score was overshadowed by concerns about Martínez, whose injury became the principal talking point after the final whistle.

For Chelsea, the goalkeeper’s condition will be closely monitored as the club awaits the outcome of his medical examinations. Any decision concerning his availability for upcoming fixtures will depend on the findings of the medical team.

The incident also served as a reminder of the physical risks goalkeepers face when challenging for aerial balls in crowded penalty areas, where split-second decisions can result in serious collisions.

For now, Chelsea will hope their goalkeeper makes a full recovery after the frightening episode. Although the victory provided an important boost to their Premier League campaign, the immediate priority remains Martínez’s health and the results of the further assessments he underwent in hospital.
