Christian Eriksen has left German club VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, bringing his one-year spell with the club to an early end.
The Denmark international and Wolfsburg agreed to terminate his contract on Wednesday, September 23, despite the midfielder’s deal originally running until June 30, 2027.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in September 2025 after leaving Manchester United and went on to make 34 appearances for the German club across all competitions. He scored three goals and provided 10 assists during his time with the Wolves.
The decision comes after Eriksen suffered an on-field medical episode while playing for Denmark against Ukraine in June.
The incident occurred during an international friendly in Odense, where Eriksen collapsed after clutching his chest. He received treatment on the pitch before being able to leave the field on his own and was subsequently taken to hospital. He has not played since the incident.
The episode brought back memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland in June 2021. He subsequently returned to professional football after being fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
Following the latest incident, Eriksen spent time undergoing rehabilitation in Denmark.
The 34-year-old has now decided to leave Wolfsburg, with his desire to be closer to his family in Denmark playing a central role in the decision.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” Eriksen said in a statement released by Wolfsburg.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midfielder also reflected on his time at the club, describing it as a period filled with highs and lows.
“My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows,” he said. “I know that the club is now in good hands to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that VfL has a successful future ahead.”
Eriksen thanked the club’s supporters, teammates and staff for their support during his time in Germany.
“It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period,” he added.
Wolfsburg’s managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, said the club respected Eriksen’s decision and wanted him to have the freedom to determine his next step.
“For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s,” Hecking said.
“We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.”
Hecking also praised Eriksen’s character during his short spell at Wolfsburg, saying the Danish midfielder had left a lasting impression on his teammates, staff and supporters.
“Despite the short time, he left a lasting impression on his teammates, staff and fans,” Hecking said. “We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the best from the bottom of our hearts.”
Eriksen arrived at Wolfsburg with considerable experience from his years in the Premier League, Serie A and European competitions. Before joining the German side, he had represented Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United.
His first season at Wolfsburg produced a number of strong individual contributions, including 10 assists in 34 appearances. He also served as club captain during the campaign.
However, Wolfsburg’s season ended in disappointment as the club were relegated from the Bundesliga after losing their relegation play-off, ending their long stay in Germany’s top division.
Eriksen’s departure means his contract has been terminated before the start of the 2026/27 campaign, with Wolfsburg now competing in the second tier of German football.
For Eriksen, the immediate priority is returning to Denmark and remaining close to his family.
It remains unclear whether the midfielder intends to continue his professional playing career, and no decision on his next footballing move has been announced.
His career has already included more than a decade at the highest level of European football, along with 151 international appearances for Denmark.
Eriksen’s departure from Wolfsburg therefore marks another significant moment in a remarkable career that has included major club honours, international tournaments and a widely documented return to football after his 2021 cardiac arrest.
For now, however, his focus is on being closer to his family in Denmark as he brings his time in Germany to an end.
Wolfsburg will now continue its campaign in the 2. Bundesliga, while Eriksen’s next chapter remains undecided.
