Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has returned to Italy to begin his rehabilitation after undergoing successful surgery on a ruptured tendon in his left hip, with the injury potentially keeping him out of action until 2027.
AC Milan confirmed on Wednesday that the Nigerian international underwent surgery in London to repair damage to the tendon of his tensor fasciae latae muscle.
The operation was performed by Professor Ernest Schilders, with the club’s doctor, Dr Stefano Mazzoni, in attendance. Milan described the procedure as a complete success and confirmed that Chukwueze would return to Italy to begin his recovery programme.
The surgery represents a significant setback for the 27-year-old, whose encouraging start to the 2026/27 campaign had been interrupted by the hip problem.
Although Milan have not announced an official return date, reports from Italy suggest that his recovery could take longer than initially expected, potentially ruling him out until the early part of 2027.
Chukwueze had initially been expected to return around December, but the decision to proceed with surgery has extended concerns over his availability. According to reports, he may not be ready to resume training before the end of the year.
The winger sustained the injury after AC Milan’s Serie A meeting with Atalanta on October 18. The club initially explored non-surgical treatment before opting for an operation after the problem failed to improve sufficiently.
His absence is another blow for Milan manager Ruben Amorim, who had begun to rely on the Nigerian following his return from a loan spell at Fulham.
Chukwueze has made seven league appearances this season, providing two assists, while also featuring once in the Europa League. His pace, dribbling ability and attacking movement had offered Milan an additional option on the right flank.
The Nigerian spent last season on loan at Fulham, where he made 23 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and providing four assists. He also developed a productive understanding with compatriots Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey during his time in England.
Fulham, however, opted against activating the €26m purchase option in his loan agreement, allowing him to return to the Italian club.
The injury also presents a setback for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who will be without the winger for their upcoming international engagements while he focuses on recovery.
For now, Chukwueze’s priority will be completing his rehabilitation and regaining full fitness. With no official comeback date announced, Milan and Nigeria will have to wait for further medical updates before determining when the forward can return to competitive action.
