A senior consultant physician has died after collapsing shortly after arriving at a private hospital in Kano State, where he had gone to attend to patients waiting for an evening clinic.

The incident occurred on Saturday at Arewa Surgery Hospital in the Hotoro area of Kano. According to reports, the doctor had agreed to stand in for another consultant who was unable to keep scheduled appointments.

The incident was shared by Suleiman Harbo, an aide to the Jigawa State Governor, who said he was at the hospital with his elderly mother when the tragedy occurred.

Harbo explained that he brought his mother to the hospital at about 5:00 p.m. for a medical consultation. Upon arrival, hospital staff informed patients that the physician originally scheduled for the clinic was unavailable and that another consultant, identified as Dr. Ibrahim, had been contacted to take over.

He said several patients, most of them elderly, remained at the hospital waiting for the doctor’s arrival. Concerned about the delay, he approached the hospital reception, where staff contacted Dr. Ibrahim by telephone and informed him that patients, including many senior citizens, were waiting.

According to Harbo, the physician assured the hospital that he would arrive after observing the Maghrib prayer.

Shortly after reaching the hospital, Dr. Ibrahim reportedly became unwell moments after stepping out of his vehicle. Medical personnel immediately rushed him into the hospital’s emergency unit, where doctors made efforts to resuscitate him.

Despite their attempts, the consultant was pronounced dead approximately 15 minutes later.

He also recounted that his mother initially did not know what had happened and asked whether the doctor had arrived. Before he could answer, another patient informed her that the physician they had all been waiting to see had passed away.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences, with many paying tribute to the late physician for his dedication to serving patients until his final moments.
