A United States court document has revealed that Karl Von Batten, a US-based lobbyist hired by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, was convicted and sentenced over a domestic assault in 2003 according to reports by The cables
The details were contained in a judgment of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in an appeal involving Von Batten’s former girlfriend, Cynthia D. Murphy.
In the court document, Von Batten was identified by his former name, Karl M.E. Okeke.
According to the judgment, Murphy and Von Batten began a romantic relationship in April 2003, but their relationship later became strained.
The court said that on July 4, 2003, Murphy attended a party at Von Batten’s apartment, where they consumed alcohol.
During the gathering, Murphy reportedly had a private conversation with Von Batten’s roommate, Katy Elizabeth Gaire, who told her she had also been involved sexually with Von Batten.
The disclosure reportedly left Murphy upset and led to an argument after Von Batten entered the bathroom and confronted her.
The court said Von Batten subsequently asked Murphy to leave his apartment and then attacked her.
“Mr. Okeke dragged Ms. Murphy by her legs and arms; repeatedly hit her in the face, including her eye; kicked her in her legs and on her buttocks; and pushed her up against the wall,” the court said.
The attack reportedly left Murphy with a black eye, a swollen face, bruises and cuts inside her mouth.
The court said Murphy later locked herself in the bedroom and called 911 after Von Batten left the room.
She subsequently climbed through a bedroom window onto the outside ledge of the first-floor apartment because she feared the assault would continue.
Neighbours helped her down before she was taken to George Washington University Hospital for treatment.
Sentenced to 180 days in jail
Following the incident, Von Batten was sentenced to 180 days in jail on December 10, 2003, after a misdemeanor bench trial.
The sentence was suspended and he was placed on one year’s probation.
He was also ordered to stay away from Murphy, complete 50 hours of community service, participate in a domestic violence counselling programme and contribute to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund.
TheCable said it could not immediately establish whether Von Batten appealed the criminal conviction, adding that its correspondence to him had not been answered at the time of filing.
The latest court document arose from a separate appeal filed by Murphy over a civil protection order issued against her after she failed to leave Von Batten’s apartment when asked to do so.
The District of Columbia Court of Appeals eventually overturned the lower court’s decision and ordered the civil protection order to be vacated.
The judgment was delivered on July 3, 2008, by Judges Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, Stephen Glickman and John Ferren.
Atiku’s $1.2m lobbying contract
Diaspora Digital Media reports that Atiku hired Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., a Washington-based lobbying firm founded by Von Batten, in April 2026.
A filing under the US Foreign Agents Registration Act with the Department of Justice showed that the contract was worth $1.2 million annually.
The firm was engaged to help protect and strengthen Atiku’s “reputational standing” in the United States.
Following the disclosure of the contract, Von Batten’s background and identity have attracted public attention.
His LinkedIn profile reportedly lists his full name as Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten.
However, the 2008 US court judgment identified him as Karl M.E. Okeke.
TheCable reported that the discrepancy in the names had prompted questions about whether he subsequently changed his surname to Von Batten.
The lobbying firm also recently deleted an X post announcing what it described as Von Batten’s appointment by US President Donald Trump as a commissioner on a White House presidential commission.
The report said there had been no official communication from the White House confirming or denying the purported appointment.
