Former Super Eagles striker and Nigerian football legend Daniel Amokachi has taken another major step in his coaching career after successfully completing the CAF A coaching licence programme in Morocco.
The qualification represents an important milestone for the former Nigeria international, who has remained involved in football since ending his playing career and has previously worked in coaching roles both in Nigeria and abroad.
Amokachi announced the achievement on social media, expressing his appreciation to the Moroccan Football Federation for giving him the opportunity to participate in the coaching programme.
For a man whose playing career was defined by strength, determination and an aggressive attacking style, the latest qualification marks another stage in his transition from one of Nigeria’s most recognisable footballers to an increasingly experienced coach.
The 53-year-old, popularly known as “The Bull,” was one of the outstanding members of Nigeria’s golden generation. He represented the Super Eagles at major international tournaments and was part of the Nigerian team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.
Two years later, Amokachi was also a member of the historic squad that won gold at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Those achievements remain among the most celebrated moments in Nigerian football history.
His playing career also took him to Europe, where he established himself as a powerful forward. He enjoyed notable spells with Club Brugge in Belgium, Everton in England and Beşiktaş in Turkey, gaining valuable experience at some of the highest levels of European football.
At Everton, Amokachi was part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup in 1995. His career in Europe helped establish his reputation beyond Nigeria and provided him with experiences that have subsequently influenced his coaching journey.
After retiring from professional football, Amokachi turned his attention to coaching and has worked with several clubs. His coaching experience has included roles with Nigerian sides as well as opportunities outside the country.
He has also served as an assistant coach of the Super Eagles, giving him an opportunity to work within Nigeria’s senior national team setup and contribute his knowledge to a new generation of players.
The CAF A licence adds another layer to that experience.
The Confederation of African Football coaching licence system is designed to provide coaches with structured technical education and qualifications for working at increasingly advanced levels of the game. Amokachi’s completion of the CAF A course therefore strengthens his credentials as he continues to build his career away from the pitch.
His latest achievement also comes at a time when the importance of properly qualified African coaches is receiving greater attention. Across the continent, former international players are increasingly moving into management, using their playing experience while acquiring the technical and tactical knowledge required for coaching.
Amokachi’s decision to continue his education demonstrates that his ambitions in football extend beyond his celebrated playing career.
The Nigerian legend had previously been involved in a CAF A licence programme in Morocco, with reports in 2023 indicating that he had joined other coaches for a course in Agadir. The latest announcement confirms that he has now completed the qualification.
For Nigerian football supporters, Amokachi’s development will naturally attract interest, particularly because of his long association with the Super Eagles.
His experience as a former international player, combined with his coaching background and newly strengthened qualifications, could potentially open the door to bigger opportunities in club or international football.
