BARCELONA, SPAIN — Barcelona sporting director Deco has revealed the reasoning behind the club’s decision to sign Anthony Gordon ahead of Marcus Rashford, citing tactical fit, work rate, and long-term squad planning as the decisive factors in the Catalan club’s recruitment strategy.
Speaking in an interview with Spanish media on Wednesday, Deco explained that while Rashford was a player the club admired, Gordon’s profile was better suited to the system implemented by manager Hansi Flick. He noted that the England international’s pressing intensity, defensive contribution, and versatility across the front line made him the ideal addition to a squad that demands high energy and tactical discipline.
“Rashford is a great player, and we considered him seriously. But when we analysed what the team needed, Gordon’s characteristics aligned more closely with our style of play,” Deco stated. “Flick wants players who can press, who can run, and who understand the collective. Gordon fits that profile perfectly.”
Gordon joined Barcelona from Newcastle United in a deal reportedly worth €70 million, with add-ons potentially taking the total to €80 million. The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the La Liga giants, becoming one of the club’s marquee signings of the summer transfer window.
Deco highlighted Gordon’s ability to play on either wing and his willingness to track back as key attributes that set him apart. He also noted that the former Everton and Newcastle winger had demonstrated a hunger to improve and a maturity that convinced the club’s hierarchy he was ready for the challenge of playing at the Camp Nou.
“Anthony is a player who has grown steadily. He has shown in the Premier League that he can perform at the highest level, and he is still improving. We believe his best years are ahead of him,” Deco said.
The move marks a significant step in Gordon’s career, having established himself as one of the most exciting wide players in the Premier League over the past two seasons. His performances for Newcastle and the England national team made him a sought-after commodity, with several top European clubs reportedly expressing interest.
For Barcelona, the signing represents a statement of intent as the club seeks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season. The Catalan giants are looking to compete on multiple fronts, including La Liga and the Champions League, and Gordon’s arrival is expected to bolster their attacking options significantly.
Rashford, meanwhile, remains at Manchester United, where he continues to fight for his place in the starting lineup. The England international has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but Barcelona’s decision to prioritise Gordon means he will remain at least for now.
