Doctors Highlight the Importance of Maintaining Healthy Iron Levels in the Body

Health experts are urging Nigerians to pay attention to their iron levels, warning that low iron in the body can lead to anaemia and significantly affect energy, immunity, and overall health if not properly managed.

According to medical professionals, iron is an essential mineral that helps the body produce haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Without enough iron, the body cannot function efficiently.

Doctors explain that iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide and can affect people of all ages, especially pregnant women, children, teenagers, and individuals with poor diets or chronic illnesses.

Health experts note that symptoms of low iron levels may include persistent fatigue, weakness, pale skin, dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches, cold hands and feet, brittle nails, and reduced concentration.

Medical professionals advise individuals to include iron-rich foods in their diet such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, lentils, leafy green vegetables, eggs, and fortified cereals to help maintain healthy iron levels.

Doctors also highlight the importance of vitamin C in improving iron absorption. Consuming foods like oranges, pineapples, tomatoes, and peppers alongside iron-rich meals can enhance the body’s ability to absorb iron effectively.

Experts caution against excessive use of iron supplements without medical supervision, as too much iron can be harmful and may cause side effects or mask underlying medical conditions.

Health professionals encourage individuals who suspect iron deficiency to undergo proper blood tests before starting any treatment, as accurate diagnosis is essential for effective management.

Doctors also advise addressing underlying causes of iron loss, such as heavy menstrual bleeding, poor diet, or chronic diseases, to prevent recurring deficiency.
