Nigerian media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has sparked conversation online after revealing details about his past struggle with smoking, shedding light on how early exposure shaped a long-term habit.

In a candid statement, Ebuka disclosed that he began smoking as early as Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3), a period typically associated with teenage experimentation and peer influence. According to him, what started at a young age gradually developed into a serious addiction that lasted for over a decade.

“I started smoking in JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I got to the university, I was already smoking two packs a day,” he revealed.

His admission highlights the progression of the habit—from early curiosity to heavy dependence by the time he reached adulthood. Smoking two packs daily is widely considered a high level of consumption, often associated with significant health risks.

Ebuka’s revelation has since resonated with many, particularly young people and former smokers, who see his story as a reflection of how easily habits formed in adolescence can escalate over time. It also underscores the role of environment, peer pressure, and accessibility in shaping lifestyle choices during formative years.

Public reactions have been largely mixed but thoughtful. While some expressed surprise at the extent of his past habit, others commended his openness, noting that such transparency can help raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and the importance of making healthier choices.

Health experts have long warned that early exposure to smoking significantly increases the likelihood of long-term addiction. The World Health Organization consistently emphasizes prevention efforts targeted at young people as a key strategy in reducing tobacco use globally.
